For those who haven't noticed, a change announced at . Discussion going on at the end of the Changes to BP Website thread.

I guess there are so so so many great photos its hard for the judges to consider every single great and horrible photo (and there are many). So I can see how that helps.

12/21/2013 8:59:48 AM

I wished this wasn't true. I don't get a lot of favorites because I guess I don't give a lot of favorites, which doesn't mean I don't love the image and I try to tell them in the responses. Some people have so many friends and followers that give favorites. I sure hate to see a judge pick someone just because they have lots of friends that put them as a favorite. I don't really think they do that...

Angela, if you want to participate in the BP contest, just go to the "Contest" tab on the site ( for info. You can enter one photo a day and there are ten photo categories. It doesn't cost any money.

BP usually announces "Finalists" at the end of the following month; e.g., December's finalists will probably be announced in late January. And then they announce the winners shortly thereafter. There are 111 winning photos. All of this info is on the Contest tab.

I favorite pictures that I love or that inspire me! I do it so I can easily find them to look at again. I also happen to prefer the older style gallery and the favs do not show up on that the way they do in the newer version.

Carolyn you always have worthy images. :) Don't fret to much. I am doing horrible for August. Although I haven't entered every day I still have lots that apparently BP doesn't care for. I have done well for July. So that helps. Only 1 which was for Aug 1 has gotten an EP.

8/11/2013 8:53:10 AM

Thanks, Jackie. It just seems sort of wrong, after Jim comes on a while back and said all worthy images will get EPs..then nothing happens to most of our images. So I guess we have to interpret that to mean they aren't worthy. It seems to me it's right back to what it was before all this "new" stuff took place with the old throwing darts at the page method of picking EPs. Oh well, I guess nobody cares what I think anyway, so I'll shut up for the time being.

So I am doing horribly this month. Perhaps my photos are poor this month. I have gone with a few creative plays. Also wondering if I am hurting myself by watermaking my images. I started doing it on facebook and to save time you my same image.

8/13/2013 5:28:48 PM

Question about sizing and resolution. Some constant winners told me that they enter larger rez and even in tif. I'm wondering what everyone else does.

Kathy, I always resize to 800 pixels, TIF. BP's process will crunch larger-sized images down to 800 on long side. A long time ago, it seemed their resize process softened display image. So, many of us took control by resizing before upload. I also sharpen after resizing to 800.

8/13/2013 6:51:10 PM

Thanks, Ken. I used always to do 800 but in Jpg. Maybe, it's time to go back to doing that. How about the rez and physical size?

I just use Photoshop's Resize function. I don't adjust resolution a bit. Physical size is 800 pixels. I don't worry about the "document size" part. When I resize to 800 pixels, the document size adjusts automatically usually to 3.3 x 2.2 inches or something like that.

I have a separate folder for BP entries. They are all resized to 800 pixels, TIF, sharpened. And the parent full-res images are in different folders. I've also done side-by-side comparisons on BP with JPG and TIF, and in all honesty, I can't tell a difference. It's just that I got in a habit years ago of saving in TIF, that I kept it doing it that way.

8/13/2013 7:19:30 PM

Aha! There's what was throwing me off. A long time ago, somebody said asked why my image were so small (well, because resizing to a small pixel size, the physical size made it so.) It sounded like that was undesirable. Thanks again for your help, Ken.

8/13/2013 7:38:44 PM

Kathy, I have also been doing the same as what Ken does since he enlightened me a few years ago. And about the same time I also started processing most of my images in the RAW format.

8/13/2013 8:18:22 PM

I do mine in RAW also. After two attempts with TIFs, I finally returned to jpgs, which worked.

Well, seeing as it looks as though my Aug 6 entry was skipped, I'll wait for the one on the 13th.

And......... I'll share some off-site good news. Out of 12 Storyboards I entered in our County Fair, 3 got Blue Ribbons; 3 more got Reds; and the next 3 received Whites. My Aug 13 is part of one of the Blue Ribbon boards.

The best thing of all is that one of my Blue Ribbon entries (the Country Scene - barns) took Best of Show.

I don't care what others say; getting validation from Judges does go far to make you feel good about yourself.

Sorry to ask this again but not sure if anyone saw it.

I just started watermarking so that I can use the same image on face book. Since doing it I am noticing a huge difference between last month where I got EP on every image so far except 2 and this month I only received 1 on the first day. I am hurting my chances of RP by water making my images?

8/17/2013 5:34:28 AM

That is such an interesting question, Jackie. I've always watermarked by images uploaded to BP as I am not aware of BP providing any watermarking. If someone is aware, it would be great to know how to access it.

EPs have been consistent until 'the change-over', so it would appear watermarking had no significance.

There are images that have large-sized watermarks, and it might be possible for larger ones to impact the image. Maybe someone can comment on this.

8/17/2013 5:57:58 AM

BP does have a way to watermark images on upload - I use it all the time. I use the alternate uploaded and at one point in the process I have the chance to click a box and have my image watermarked. It's white, almost transparent, lower right, quite discrete. I don't think watermarks hurt an image unless, as Marilyn says, they are large or obtrusively placed. Then they kind of ruin the viewing experience IMO

8/17/2013 6:35:42 AM

A belated congrats Kathy! You must have been so thrilled. It's wonderful to receive a ribbon, but to get as many as you did is spectacular!

8/17/2013 10:40:44 AM

Thank you to everyone who left the kind words here and on FB. It means a lot when fellow members take the time to leave comments in response to good (or sad) news or in admiration of a winning image.

I only wish those who are the recipients of those comments or praise would take the time to acknowledge the time people to do so. Sadly, that does not include the members who will read this and who always respond to comments. I've decided not to bother with the winners who seem to be "Hit and Runs". Is that nasty of me?

8/17/2013 1:45:12 PM

Kathy, why do you keep looking like Tammy? :-) I'm one of the ones who hasn't commented yet, I wanted to write you personally but haven't had a chance yet! :-( I've learned not to expect anything from anyone because the disappointment can be devastating! I expect nothing but when something does happen what a joy!

I am thrilled for your many wins and proud that you do go out and work your photography in competitions like this! I just do have the confidence to do that!

8/17/2013 2:34:23 PM

Hey, I get how busy everyone is - and how we can't comment on every image, but if people enter images and win consistently - it would be nice if they acknowledged (even in a group-based thank you), the comments made on their behalf....

Trust me, this concern is NOT directed at the people who add to these monthly thread from Cheri and others.

congratulations Kathy. sounds like a wonderful Fair competition for you. :)

8/17/2013 3:23:38 PM

Congratulations, Kathy, what a fantastic honor!!

Regarding your other question, if I understand it correctly, I'm often an offender, in that I rarely go back to my own thread to say "thank you" for the kind comments left. It's not that they aren't appreciated; they very much are! I just don't think many members have the time to go back to the threads on which they comment, to see the appreciative replies. Instead, I *always* try to leave a reciprocal comment on an image by the person who left a comment on mine. I feel that taking the time to view and comment on that person's image is a more valuable form of thanks, for most people. Maybe I'm wrong about that.

8/18/2013 9:11:47 AM

  Along The Banks-Aug 7th.

8/18/2013 1:35:48 PM

I really wasn't aiming my comment at the regular, and honestly don't think that it's necessary to say Thank You to each and every individual. But, after a week - it wouldn't hurt to return just to acknowledge everyone in general.

I do get an email notice every time someone adds to the thread and go to check it out. Occasionally, I will ask a question (like what lens was used or where the picture was taken.) It means a lot to receive an answer (even if it's a week or a month later.)

8/18/2013 2:44:06 PM

If someone asks me a specific question like that, I always respond in a private email. If I think the information is of general interest and it's early (like I only have one or two comments), I may respond in the thread, too, but I also send the person who asked the question the answer privately. I never look back on threads I've commented on, and I seldom go to threads on my own images to thank commenters, individually or in general, because I imagine most folks are like me and don't come back to read the thank you. I know some people thank each and every commenter in the thread, but I'm not among them. To be honest, when I joined I used to go to the Friendly Praise section and look at images there. Then I noticed that every time a comment was posted, the image popped to the top and the # of replies increased. It looked to me as if replying Thank You to every commenter might be perceived as an attempt to keep my image in the forefront of that section, so I decided not to do it.
I do try to get to the galleries of people who comment on mine and comment on something I like, but I know I don't do that often enough. Most of my time here is spent interacting in the FFFP Club (which anyone who is interested in critiquing or having images critiqued is welcome to join) or in going to Recent Entries, opening full, and browsing, stopping to comment those that really catch my eye whether they belong to someone I know or not.
I didn't take your comments personally, Kathy, but I do want to suggest that there are many ways to give back and be a positive, contributing member of the site.

8/18/2013 3:03:04 PM

I agree with what Nikki said. I rarely, if ever go back to my own images, or anybody else's for the second time. If somebody asks something specific, I email them personally.
Sorry I'm not commenting, my hands hurt, and the situation at home isn't going to get better, so I'm pretty well done commenting. I do manage to say something in these QnA's every so often, and hope that it gets to more people that way.

8/18/2013 3:22:18 PM

8/8 Capt Jacks MT category :-)

8/18/2013 9:52:19 PM

Responding to the monthly forums like this one or to anyone's images in any manner is just a different way of saying Thanks. Also, knowing members have physical of life issues is a majorly good reason to cut back on responding.

I'll concede the point. Entering the contest does not make you part of a community and if we never hear of you again it shouldn't matter.

Viveca V posted this in the May EFP thread, so I'm reposting it here and giving her this link...

on 8/22/2013 12:14:39 PM I have written three times about the issue of no Editors Picks, even on my great submissions that have won International prizes. The always give me the same silly answer, ' we are still going thru photos..' But the truth is I have not had a EP for over three months. I am not renewing my Basic Web site which ends in a few days. If things do not change I will create a new web site other than my Deluxe with BP. Sincerely, V. Venegas

Thank you Kathy. Not one of my submissions from June, July or August have gotten an EP. Having been a judge myself many times before at local and USA photo contests, I never submit a photo that would not deserve an EP. is ok if I do not get in some, but all of my submissions? something is wrong. My Basic expires this august 28 and I not renewing. Deluxe expires on january 2014, I will stay only if I get an accurate answer.

8/22/2013 2:42:10 PM

Viveca, how many have you submitted? I took a look at your gallery and your photos are certainly "worthy" in my opinion. All I know is that things have changed. I used to get EP on just about every photo I entered. I was under the impression that if a photo was well composed, well exposed and well focused then it was "worthy". Evidently this is no longer enough. I get EP every so often but nothing like I used to get. You are not alone. I have enjoyed the fellowship of other photographers but the reason I joined BP was the contest. I can post my photos other placed and I do just that. These other places have photographers who are friendly and helpful as well but no contest. I am still entering but like everyone else who has been here for a while, I am frustrated and unhappy about the way things are going. Evidently no one at BP is even considering how the old timers feel. By the way, congratulations, Kathy, on the excellent showing at the state fair.

Viveca, I saw your gallery. You have lots of gold and silver medals. Doesn't make sense you wouldn't get any EPs for June, July, and August. Granted, they have a long ways to go for finalizing July and August; not even half way done.

How many photos did you submit?

8/22/2013 4:50:39 PM

@Susan I think you should. Submission for this year is already complete. However, keep an eye out on the Maryland State Fair website around June/July of next year. They should have something posted by then for registration.

8/22/2013 5:40:22 PM

Viveca is a GP winner, so obviously she has EP worthy stuff. It's just that they are right back to the old dart tossing method of EP handouts.

Viveca it makes no sense. I'm actually mad I came back. I missed the people here but its really not worth the lack of fun it seems this contest now brings me. Its crazy they started August and they are not done with July apparently. I'm just not enjoying this anymore. Viveca your photos rock. Love them all.

I realize that the EFP's have become fewer and further between, and people are upset, but, is it just me or have they skipped almost the entire month of Aug. or is it just my entries.....again? just curious.....

9/7/2013 8:39:19 PM

Nothing since the 16th of August for me, Jeana - but I did get one for September 6th today so three skips and three EP's in September.

9/7/2013 8:48:14 PM

Hi Jeanna, They are just way behind on August... last post for an EFP was for the 16th and they have started Sept already. Two months going at once.. so confusing and imho stupid. So, it's not just you... it's all of us.

Jeanna, they would rather confuse us and do 2 months at the same time instead of finishing the month that has already passed.. Wait that would be the smart thing to do.. It is nice that BP is keeping us up to date on the 2 month at a time EP selection or the lack of EP selection these days.. These days I am not even sure what the hell to enter anymore.. I am nearing the end of my subscription..

9/8/2013 11:24:52 AM

I've got only 3 EPs for August (the last of them for 13th but already 4 for September (both months, I submitted every day)... my photos most certainly haven't changed so much... Before spring, I used to get an EP almost every day, but then their number went down a lot...

9/9/2013 1:48:26 PM

  8/18.. EOD.. Wind Catchers.
I can't believe they would give this an EP and skip over all my WAY BETTER stuff. I'm just beyond disgusted.

9/9/2013 2:03:56 PM

I was just curious.....
It's terribly frusterating for everyone I know! My last EP, of 5 was on the 17th....I would think that doing two months at once would be really time comsuming for the judges, but hey, I guess it's their schedule, not mine....just wish things was back to the way it used to be!!! My subscription is due to expire soon as well....certainly serious thoughts of NOT renewing!

It is funny, but just to prove a point and a theory, I submitted new images that were Gold winners in the same category as in the past.. To my amazement NONE of them even get an EP.. That is messed up as hell.. A Gold winner last year and not even an EP this year..

These days I am not even sure what the hell to enter anymore.. I am nearing the end of my subscription and it is time maybe to move on..

Brian, don't forget...BP said that we could no longer resubmit previous contest entries. That's probably why your resubmitted gold medal didn't get an EP...they remembered it. Just submit photos you like..and enjoy. :-)

9/9/2013 5:29:12 PM

Hey Ken, I wonder if you resubmit in a different category is o.k.??

Jo Ann, I emailed them and asked if submitting in a another category is okay. Nope. :(

9/9/2013 6:31:56 PM

You also can't crop it differently and re-enter, or you can't use a different filter and re-enter. Apparently, you can learn from your mistakes, but you can't do anything to prove it.

With the tens of thousands..hundreds of thousands of photos on the site, it would be virtually impossible to know if a "new' photo wasn't submitted into the contest, especially for photos originally submitted 5 years ago. In my humble opinion. Now a gold medal or finalists; that might be more memorable.

BP did say you could enter the same photo, if altered "drastically." You'll have to interpret "drastically." My recommendation...recrop it...maybe play around with different DD effects like HDR, or whatever...and enter it new. Worst case, it doesn't get an EP. Life will go on..

9/9/2013 7:01:20 PM

They specifically mentioned not cropping and reentering (95% sure I remember that one, because that often is my problem - too "big" a scene, and it struck a chord.)

9/9/2013 7:05:28 PM

I guess I missed it when it was said about not reentering an image....Oh well.....I think that's alittle silly, as Kathy said, can't prove to them that perhaps we've learned from mistakes by re-submitting an image whether it got an EP or not. I think you should be able to, even with slight adjustments, lighting, noise removal, sharpness that sort of thing.....seems a tad picky to me, but then again....Who Am I? The fun is really starting to fade for me! It seems to me that they tend to lean towards the same types of images anyway, with the same editing styles. Photograhpy to me is much more than that! It's an Art, just like a painting! Everyone's view on the same subject is seen differently, and should have that view taken into consideration. If you're into selling images, someone out there Will like your work whether it has a Finalist or Winner award from BP or not, because ultimately, photography has become a work of art! Why do you think so many filter styles are used in digital? In my Drs office, every thing hanging on their walls in the waiting room began as a Photo....using photoshop and filters and such, each one looks like a painting! They didn't choose those particular images based on correct lighting, exposure etc....they chose them on the style of ART the images turned out to be. I stopped displaying EP's in my gallery, what's the point? I only keep track for myself, to know which, if any, might move past the EP stage....HERE'S A THOUGHT! With everyone seeming to be up in arms about which catagory to enter in, with the thought of not being able to re-enter the same image twice, Get Rid Of Catagories all together! Might simplify alot for the one entering and for the judges. Just look at the photo and not try to determine if it "fits" in a certain catagory or not. Several images could fit in many catagories, could be a reason why we want to re enter....I'm rambling on so I'm going to shut up now!!! LoL! :D Have a good night all!!

9/9/2013 8:39:41 PM

Jean, all your images are winners in my book :-) Absolutely gorgeous pictures! I agree about the categories. I never can decide what to put my pictures in, I used to enter them in catch all when I could not decided, but now we are not allowed to do that either...

9/9/2013 11:54:06 PM

Yeah, they sort of shot themselves in the foot with the pickiness on categories. Now that they shot down the options to put stuff in Travel/Place and Catch All, everything ends up in Landscapes, and that helps nobody, because they always pick the same people's stuff anyway. So now they skip over everybody's good work and pick just a few, JUST LIKE ALWAYS, so who is benefiting from the changes?? The EP picker, that's who. I definitely challenge Jim's saying that they are looking at every photo. I don't believe that, no matter what he says. If the quality of stuff that does go through had gotten better, maybe, but that's sure as heck not the case. It's same old, same old, just like before only less of it.

9/10/2013 2:29:28 AM

I agree about categories, too... and if they have rules about categories then they should follow them: why a DD or a flower image sometimes wins in EOD?

I am curious is to wonder if "Everyone" is feeling the pinch of not getting EP's like they used to or is it that the usual Winners are still getting EP's like before and the rest of us are getting skipped..

Just curious and I am not here to offend anyone nor do I want angry emails, I am just wondering if BP is playing fair and cutting back EP's for "Everyone"

9/11/2013 11:43:06 AM

Maybe BP is just encouraging us all to "step up our game," including myself! I know I think twice before uploading photos now! No offense to anybody on this thread - just my 2 cents' worth. The only thing we can count on is that change is constant and evidently BP is changing things -- love it or hate it. Best of luck to everyone in the BP community in the August challenge, including the winners who always win!

9/12/2013 2:26:29 AM

Ok, you guys are gonna make me reveal some of my own tortured soul here. I've long thought that most "winning" folks on here just produce consistently excellent images. Which I do not. I kinda feel my own explanation is related to first, experimenting with new subjects or technique, second not being very proficient with software (beyond the basics) and third, not having better equipment (lenses, in particular). In short, I often feel like it's a struggle to make a really good image. Lord knows I keep at it (passion or obssession?) and I can see a huge improvement from when I first started, without a doubt. I figure that unlike me, who often gets only a couple good shots out of many taken, that these winning-est folks are more proficient than myself. And that, just like when I started at BP, if I keep striving to produce images like those I will only become more proficient as well. Even if I have to take a break every now and then to give my head a rest from all the hair pulling ;)

Comparing all the images that could/should be winners and narrowing that down has got to be a tough job. I'm not immune to wondering about favorites on BP but I also realize that I don't know the criteria for selecting one great image over another. Like many have said before, feedback from the judges on why a winning image was chosen would be immensly helpful! Not to "justify" their choice but to add to the learning element here.

9/12/2013 4:10:10 AM

We whiners, whine because the choices they make, make no sense to us...especially on our own galleries. I, for one, wouldn't care so much about the number of finalists, but the insanity (IMO) of the ones they pick. For example, last month I had only two "Staff Favorites" and the one they made a finalist, while a nice enough shot, in my opinion wasn't anywhere near as good as the one that didn't make finalist. You can see both of them on page 6 of my gallery. Again, the cause of yet another whine is on page 4. Who would pick the wind catchers and skip the car (~8~) and the butterfly?? I don't get it, and that's why I whine! Other whiners, please weigh in.

Like a good friend said to me recently here, It is the lack of consistency in which the EP's are being handed out now..

9/12/2013 5:29:02 AM

I'd like some learning time on today's POTD. It was a Finalist in the Catch-All category for July, and I loved it, but was so confused. To me, it looks as though it would have to be a Digital Darkroom piece to achieve those wonderful effects. The settings that were used are available with the image.

Would some of you more knowledgeable photographers look at it, and tell me how it was done? It's so fascinating, but I cannot figure it out (and it's driving me nuts!) Thanks.

Kathy, I think it's a non DD type of photo. I'm sure he did some touch-ups, etc. Maybe a boost in yellows?

Just looking at the frozen drops, he probably used shutter speed of 1/60th sec or so...maybe faster, with back-lighting. You could click his "contact" button and ask him.

Loved that photo. Doesn't look like much done in post to me. Looks like perfect lighting and time of day. Marvelous capture.

9/12/2013 7:04:42 AM

  Here are the settings:
f/11, 1/640 second, ISO: 200, Focal Length: 185mm

Back lighting could be the answer I was looking for. I just couldn't figure out how 2 or 3 people were sharp with dark blues in the clothing, and the others were covered in gold speckled light.

Thanks for the feedback. Regardless of how it was done, it really is a remarkable picture.

9/12/2013 7:21:36 AM

The only thing I can put my finger on as to why some of my photos are not getting EP's is that I am trying to learn texturing and special effects. I never get an EP on those shots even though people comment on them and seem to like them. I like them the best often times but it does not matter what I like, does it? I can't complain about what was a finalist or not but I do wonder about why some shots are chosen and others are not. It is totally subjective and therefore inconsistent. And I will continue to experiment with textures and hope for the best. Ken Smith pointed out that some of my photos are too dark and he was right. It is all about learning. Thanks, Ken.

9/12/2013 8:46:33 AM

Harriet! I just checked your gallery out and it is beautiful! I would hate to try to decide which one I WOULD NOT give it girl!

Hey y'all, check her gallery out..

jo ann c.

9/12/2013 9:34:06 AM

I also have a tough time figuring out how they choose...They seem to always choose EPs for OK ones but not the ones that I am most proud of. THose just get ignored. When I was an Administrator of several groups at a different site, sometimes I got busy with other stuff and rushed through approving images to be included in our groups. I would just look through thumbnails and not have the time to actually take a close look at all the images. Sometimes I think that is what they are doing here...just glancing at thumbnails and dismissing many awesome images. While the same folks win and get finalists consistently, makes me wonder if they are just favorites of the judges...A couple months ago I saw one member who had 12 finalists while many of us got none and somehow that just did not seem fair, Granted their images are always spectacular, but if they are just going to limit the amount of awards, it would be nice to give others a chance and not just be lazy and give them out to the same folks every month. For me, it's discouraging to go from getting EPs for almost every image to getting just a few with no explanation. I had a very successful photo gallery on Cape Cod for 3 years, and I know I should not let what happens on this site discourage me,but it still feels like not being one of the "Popular kids" in school...

9/12/2013 1:41:06 PM

Jill, you hit a theory that's been running around my brain the past couple of days. It occurred to me that a quick glance at hundreds of thumbnails is the expedient way to cull out the not-so-fabulous shots. It's also the perfect way to miss some outstanding photographs.

Case-in-point is when I try to look through the "lists" of Finalists. There are so many that I don't open up on the first run-through, only to discover later that I had missed some truly special images.

If this is an accurate guess, it sure would explain a lot. Sort of. Maybe.

9/12/2013 2:27:54 PM

I would so appreciate knowing who has had the 12 finalists. I don't look through carefully enough to know and it would be a great education to know who BP thinks is the best of the best!

Did you notice that there are 11791 EPs on that site, Ken.

9/17/2013 1:53:14 PM

I tried to make this image of Patrick's a favorite. Each time I clicked on one of the two hearts, this is the message that popped up...

"Photo Removed or Not Approved

Sorry - the photo you have requested has been removed or has not been approved for publishing."

Seeing as the image IS there, what is happening now? Btw, I was able to access the discussion.

9/17/2013 1:57:39 PM

When a member decides to delete an image for some reason and does so, the thumbnail often remains. This happens in our FFFP Club gallery quite frequently - people delete an image from their main gallery but not the thumbnail from the club gallery. So you click on it and it fails to open and you get this message instead. I am guessing the same thing happens in the EP folder. The image was entered, it was left in the contest long enough to get an EP, and then Patrick (who probably did not realize they had not gotten to this point in the month and thought it had been passed over) deleted it.

9/17/2013 2:18:03 PM

Both the thumbnail, the full size image, and the entire discussion are there - both on the EP list and in Patrick's gallery.

9/17/2013 2:31:02 PM

I almost deleted the photo I got my most recent EP on. Because things are so haphazard one could make that mistake. I started putting the date entered and the category in the description box. This helps me know when a photo has been passed over but the best policy is to wait until the finalists have been announced. Again, placing the date entered and the category in the description box has helped me keep up with my entries. Also, on the last day of the month I print out the pages in the "contest entries" tab. On the first of the new month, this page goes away and it can get confusing. It is easy to think that a photo has been passed over.

9/17/2013 2:41:26 PM

I've been doing that for at least two years, Harriet. It was too confusing to keep track of all my Finalists and Winners. (snicker). Many members have their images organized by highest awards first. It's very difficult when they mention current entries - with or without EPs. I usually quit looking after the first 8 screens.

9/17/2013 3:16:28 PM

Btw, I honestly don't think that Patrick removed his image. It's all still there.

Finally! I just couldn't figure out what might be wrong with this photo. I guess they just hadn't got to it yet:

I'm Outa' Here!

9/18/2013 5:43:01 AM

Well something is definitely wrong-this is the wrong photo for the ID #. What a way to start the Day! : (

9/18/2013 5:46:49 AM

Oops, my mistake, I read it wrong:

I just got it all brought home just how unimportant this all is. Our neighbor just found our "neighborhood dog" Sammy dead in the road. No EP or lack of EP makes as much difference as that will.
We will miss him so much.

9/18/2013 12:28:01 PM

Yes, ultimately unimportant. You've got that right, and I'm sorry about Sammy.

9/18/2013 12:31:27 PM

Yes,too bad about the neighborhood dog. Dogs are such wonderful animals and we get so attached to them. Just a thought. I print out the pages of entries I made each month. I think I started doing it in April. That month I entered 18 photos and 16 got EP. Boy did things change in May. So far August looks pretty good although my favorite photo was skipped. Oh well, could be worse. I am not complaining, just thinking out loud.

Hey Carolyn, so sorry to hear about Sammy. And you are correct; the EP is pretty unimportant compared to life's challenges. I hope it wasn't a neighbor that hit Sammy, and didn't stop.

9/18/2013 2:04:15 PM

No, it wasn't. He got down on Hwy 9 about 1/2 mile from our road and somebody ran him down. I'm so sad, I can't stop crying. He was such a good boy.

9/18/2013 2:53:30 PM

  So sorry about Sammy, Carolyn.

So very sorry about Sammy, Carolyn. It is always a tragedy when our pets are hit senselessly by people not looking what's ahead of them on our roads.

Two Blue

Staff Favorite - Flowers - August 2013

Blue Daze flowers, also known as Hawaiian Blue Eyes, scientific name evolvulus glomerata.
The little blue flowers, each about the size of a nickel, bloom along branches of slightly hairy gray-green foliage, and close up at night.
These blue daze are growing in a pot along with sweet potato vine, the yellow-green leaves in the background.
Minor sharpening in CS. (No color adjustment ... they really are this beautiful blue!)

That makes a grand total of 11 for August. What a bummer! At least is was one more than last month, if that's supposed to be any consolation.

Last entry for August. Not sure of the date but it was after my 8/28 entry.

9/23/2013 7:36:17 AM

I guess they are finished with August. Good luck everyone.

9/23/2013 7:36:35 AM

  I think I was 11 for 11 in I'm 4 for 10 in August...Back to the drawing board, I guess.. :-(

9/23/2013 7:43:39 AM

No, three for August is a bummer Carolyn! :-(

9/23/2013 7:51:11 AM

6 for August for me, but I did not enter very many as I had lots of medical tests going on.

9/23/2013 8:23:03 AM

  8/30 skipped.
8/31 skipped
that makes a big 8 out of 26 entered...oh well...:-( Last month I got 16 out of 31...go figure...

9/23/2013 9:25:26 AM

Ah, I feel your pain. 11 of 31.

9/23/2013 9:58:07 AM

10/27 for me. It seems each month the EPs get more selective.

9/24/2013 8:04:27 AM

Last two entries for August got EPs.
8/27 3, 2, 1 - Elements of Design
8/29 Thief - Animals

I had a total of 18 entries with 13 getting EPs.

I only have 2 entries in Sept so far! Too much other stuff going on.

Good luck to everyone in the August picks!

9/24/2013 3:48:40 PM

Will somebody post the Finalist List link on my FB timeline? It's too depressing to keep returning to my no EP August. Thanks.

9/24/2013 4:05:25 PM

I got two Staff Favorites, but no Finalists yet.

9/30/2013 7:05:34 AM

Finalist list for August is not out since I checked. However, I did get two Staff Favorites which I never got those before, one for my Self Portrait which really surprised me and one for Reflections in the Gardens... so maybe they are nearly ready for the Finalist in the next day or so...who knows? Only the Shadow Knows! :-)

9/30/2013 7:39:53 AM

I got 4 Staff Favorites, no word on Finalists. I did get a email from JIm though ! He asked me if I wanted to not get the mailings for the classes but still get the POTD and other new info. I wrote him back that I would appreciate it and he wrote me back that he took care of it for me. Granted I wrote to them quite awhile ago about all the emails I was getting, but it's nice to know he does read them.

9/30/2013 10:00:08 AM

A BIG Congrats to all the wonderful finalists! This month they seem to be spread out much more fairly :-)

9/30/2013 12:45:25 PM

Three SFs for August with two going on to Finalist! And yes, August seemed spread out and like it dragged on forever!

Good luck to all in the next round :)

9/30/2013 12:53:55 PM

  The Finalists are out...

My week is jammed with preparing for a trip, so please accept this as my sincere congratulations to those of you who did receive a Silver (and further to those who receive Golds.)

9/30/2013 1:21:06 PM

This truly is not sour grapes but the Monthly Theme has 23 Finalists.

One is a definite "snapshot", one has no person in it, but just shoes, one I doubt could be shot by the subject because there is no way the camera could be placed at a high level aimed at a lower level from which the photographer dove (even with a timer!), and probably one of the most fantastic SPs I've ever seen was created using a special filter (totally digital darkroom effects - not enhanced out-of-the-camera.)

Personally, I believe that the latter one is actually Grand Prize fabulous, but honestly - why were these four entered into the MT? And, why did the Judges think that was okay? I'm becoming more and more confused as time goes on. I thought the new rules were much more stringent than in the past.

9/30/2013 1:48:47 PM

I got one of my Staff Favorites is now a finalist, the Reflection one.. still have the other as staff fav.

Finalist of course are out! I'm excited to get ANYTHING! :-)

I understanding us saying that we wish a great image we saw or even had hopes for one of ours to reach the next level but I do think its wrong and harmful to criticize the works of others. I don't think I have ever seen anything against doing post process work in the monthly theme. Regardless if they have or have not this is a public forum and no one that submitted an entry and probably celebrating should have to read about others questioning the validity and talent of their shot.

9/30/2013 2:38:12 PM

I'm not criticizing the photographers (and never have done it; once an image is entered, it's too late and could be hurtful to the entrant.)

However, I'm just trying understand how the categories work - especially after the specific points were made in the couple of months. If anything, I'm really questioning the judging as applied by the rules and definitions.

Call me foolish, but I keep thinking maybe someone (staff or member) will finally explain things so that I actually "get it".

I truly did not mean to offend anyone, and probably should quit asking questions.

9/30/2013 3:13:43 PM

Kathy, there is nothing to be explained, they do what they want here and I definelty see that anything is up for grabs, so just enter and hope for the best because there is no rhyme or reason anymore!

9/30/2013 3:40:18 PM

The monthly theme was self portrait. I have never seen BP give instructions on the subject of the monthly theme. That said, Kathy it sounds like you are not sure what constitutes a self-portrait?

I don't think I've ever seen where BP give instructions as to the subject of the monthly theme. And it seems that entries represent different interpretations of the subject. One thing BP does say in their how to win section is that they look for new, fresh or original interpretations of subject matter. You might want to reference that section. I know I look at the categories section, often! Lol

9/30/2013 3:51:44 PM

I'm with Kathy, I don't get it. The shoes is a very good photo but how does it qualify for self-portrait? Most people have a body. You are right, the best is the digital one--great shot and idea, but again most people I know do not have leaves around the face. :)

83 .  Latest Changes to BP website
This discussion isn't really about the contest, but there doesn't seem to be a place for general discussions of the website so I'll put it here.

Jim announced some changes recently - even polled people for input and was apparently thrilled with the responses. Now some changes have been made. I'm sure some of us like some of them and others don't. This discussion is meant to be a place where we can say both what we like about the changes and why (that may help other members enjoy BP even more) as well as what we don't like and why (that may help BP decide what to change in the future).

7/31/2013 8:08:59 AM

  I'll start.
I already wrote BP about this, but I that was before I realized how much impact it would have on me. The "previous page" and "next page" arrows up in the top corners of the page that enabled us to step through a set of entries (Recent Entries; Contest Finalists; Club galleries) are gone. I used these all the time when I perused the entries in order to enjoy the images full size and decide which ones I wanted to comment and/or vote (club) on. The fact that they are no longer there and I now have to use my browser back button in order to do this will cut out my commenting almost completely. I do not like to work from thumbnails - too easy to miss a great one by not opening it. And sometimes an eye-catching thumb turns out to be disappointing. The ability to step through full size images easily is very important to me.

7/31/2013 8:15:53 AM

Your note is thoughtful and should be helpful for BP. I hope that BP will listen to us and consider us before they make changes. I have enjoyed BP for a couple of years, now and I believe that I am a better photographer because of the association. I hope things work out for all of us, BP included.

7/31/2013 8:27:04 AM

My feelings on some changes. Just spent my morning working on this email & discussion and I'm tired and frustrated.

Nikki, I will read your comments and respond when I have more time. Here is the info you asked me to post here:

BP Photo Contest Link On Your Description Line

I hate to bring this up during our June finalists and winners celebration time but I'm taking a break from BetterPhoto and I need your help for changes while I'm away.

Has anyone else noticed the changes to a finalist, second place winner and I assume first place and grand prize winners pages?

Here's an example:

Contrast of Colors

If you don't like the change would you please notify BetterPhoto and ask them to change it?

Here is the message I wrote to them this morning which explains it a little better and my feelings about it:

Hi BetterPhoto staff,

I don't like the new feature where you have added a link on the same line as my title of a finalist or second place winner.

You've placed it in front of my description and it takes people away from my description page.

I put a lot of time and thought to describe the image and you have added a link to your home page which advertises for you trying to attract new people to the contest.

It is advertising for you and I have marked I don't want advertising.

Would you please consider changing this as I feel it is unfair & unattractive?

Please try to find another way to do this.

Thank you in advance,

Wrote BP about the forward and back buttons and Jay Wadley just answered. They are supposed to be there - and are there on most systems. I can see them in IE on my computer but not in Firefox (which is what I use). My husband can see them in Firefox on his computer. I'm trying to figure out what's wrong on my end - when I do, I'll let you know in case anyone else has the same issue.

I am just so glad to know they are not supposed to be missing :)

7/31/2013 10:06:11 AM

Jay just emailed me regarding my problem and I just sent him url samples. I'm impressed & grateful he responded so quickly and they are looking into it.

Hopefully all these glitches will be worked out.

I use Firefox so when I have time I will see what you mean, Nikki.

I have other problems too.. with uploading that never use to happen. Will have to deal with them after my break from BetterPhoto or maybe they will fix themselves by the time I return. :)

7/31/2013 10:17:58 AM

Jay is probably the most member-responsive person at BP. He's helped me a couple of times, and many others have mentioned the same thing. If it needs fixing, and can be fixed - Jay is the best fixer-upper ever!

7/31/2013 11:45:24 AM

I have a Mac and Safari as my browser. I just tried Google Chrome, and I have the little hearts on both internet systems. I will email Jay at BP and see if he can suggest any changes.

7/31/2013 1:39:22 PM

No need to email Jay - he is working on this. I have sent him information from a number of sources. In general, the hearts seem to be there and working (though one person reported that they were there but not working correctly for her). It's the arrows to move through from one image to the next when you are in fully open mode that are there for some and not there for others.

7/31/2013 1:57:48 PM

Thank you Nikki. Well I have already sent my email to Jay. I don't see the arrows at all. I'll just wait for a reply or wait to see some changes.

7/31/2013 2:18:39 PM

If you look at a full size image in somebody's gallery who uses the old style, you no longer can favorite their pictures...There is a favorite button in the new style gallery, but not in th old one. Now I have no way to favorite many of the photos I look at as lots of folks still use the old style galleries.

7/31/2013 2:38:09 PM I see the little hearts...totally missed them as I was looking for the words. It would be nice if they let us know about stuff like this...Thankful for the Forums :-)

7/31/2013 2:42:17 PM

Sorry I used the wrong url in my earlier post.

It should have been:

Contrast of Colors

OR look at this page on Jill O's gallery which has not been fixed yet either.

OR Nikki's

I hope I can explain this clearly...

Jay did fix it around noon but now there are all kinds of mistakes on my pages and it is still wrong. The heart is not red and there is funny lettering under my photo images

I told him that by clicking on the silver finalist badge it takes you to BP's home page where people can see the CONTEST IS NOW FREE and open to everyone.

I also said that it doesn't go to the WINNER"S PAGE like it suggests. I said the new line in blue right under my photo that says "Photo Contest Finalist" is redundant as it does the same thing and this is what he said back to me:

"The link and badge go back to our contest page which shows what contest the award was for. For your personal gallery you can choose not to display the badges."

So that is all the time and energy I am going to put into this. I have learned, "God grant me the serenity to accept the things I can not change and courage to change the things I can." AND in this case... I can't change this!

BetterPhoto are making changes I may or may not like them but I will have to just accept them if I want peace within.

I just wanted you to know I tried to fix something not just for myself but for all members. Right now I'm really disappointed as I wasted precious time and energy for nothing.

If the new people they are trying to attract are more important than the old and faithful than so be it. Time will tell how well that works out for them.

7/31/2013 3:38:31 PM

Thanks Nikki, Hope Jay gets this worked out. I use Firefox, Windows 7, 64 bit. Do not use any other browser. Having same problem as you have described. Will hold off on email/phone calls to see how this plays out.

7/31/2013 7:43:19 PM

Just like Nikki, I use Firefox most of the times and the arrows are not to be seen, at least for now.

7/31/2013 11:26:07 PM

For whatever it's worth, if I'm looking at what I think you're referring to, there are arrows (albeit tiny) on the pages using Google Chrome, my browser of choice.

8/1/2013 12:13:18 PM

As of about 1 hour ago, the arrows had returned. Thank you Nikki and especially Jay for being so responsive to our requests.

8/1/2013 12:17:31 PM

Oh, thanks for letting us know, Monnie and John. I use Firefox - they are there and functional now. Hooray. Thanks, Jay.

8/1/2013 12:26:10 PM

Well the arrows show up using Safari & Google Chrome, and Firefox only in the Finalist pages but not in the club that I'm in. That's a bit better. Maybe because I'm on a Mac?

8/1/2013 1:45:59 PM

Right you are, Amanda. Not there for me in the club, either. I passed this on to Jay.

8/1/2013 2:01:10 PM

  Good morning everyone,

Regarding my earlier post on the new blue link under our photos with Finalists or Gold badges I said I would keep you posted on what I came up with.

Well here it is... the blue links are staying.

I'm apposed to it but have been told we will have to agree to disagree on this matter.

I found out not all members object to it as much as I do and others would like it on a separate line.

Oh well, I tried... Win some! Lose some!

I hope they fix the other glitches for everyone.

So I'm signing off on this one.

CONGRATULATIONS AGAIN TO ALL THE OUTSTANDING JUNE WINNERS & FINALISTS!!! I would love to congratulate each and everyone personally but that is impossible for me to do.

Just know... You are the best in the world... (by BetterPhoto standards)

8/2/2013 8:59:39 AM

I have been a member for many years, but don't often enter the contest or add photos. Still, I like to enter sometimes and have a place I can send people to to see my images. I find the photo uploading and sorting process to be harder and harder. Like right now I'm just trying to figure out what happened to my most recent entry, which I requested to have added to my gallery, and did sort order, and my new photo is supposed to be first in my gallery except it's not there. I used to be able to find the link for the album sort stuff, now I'm having a heck of a time finding it. I used to be able to find the links for the forums. Sure seems hard to find now. Why can't this be easy? It used to be easy.

8/6/2013 8:08:00 AM

I sympathize with your frustration, Dorothy - seems as if whenever there are improvements in technology (and not just at BP), things that seemed just fine to me are harder to use, at least at first. Maybe I can help you with your problems, though.
First, some tabs that used to drop down from the top are now on the upper left in your Member Center, so go there and look in the upper left.
For uploading, sorting, editing additions to your gallery, viewing your month's contest entries, etc., you want to click on the 2nd link down, "My Photos"; that should help with the photo sort and display problems.
For discussions, you want to click on the 5th link down, "Forums". The easiest way to find or start a new discussion is to choose one of the three red links near the top: Ask a Question, All New Questions, All New Responses.

For your other problem - locating the photo that you moved to the front of your gallery and cannot now find, it's possible that you forgot to scroll down to the bottom of the sort page and click "Submit" after you sorted. I do that sometimes - and then all my time spent sorting is for naught.

Hope this helps.

8/6/2013 9:11:58 AM

BTW, the arrows are back in the club galleries, too. Thanks again, Jay.

8/12/2013 9:34:35 PM

  Did you guys see this?
Now they are going to take "favorites" into consideration during the contest. They say they don't want it to be a popularity contest, but in the next sentence they tell you to have all your friends "favorite" your photo. In which universe isn't that a popularity contest? Just one more thing for me to dislike.

8/13/2013 9:00:42 AM

Hmm, I think that they maybe asking us to "help" in the judging part of a photo, even though the judges have the last call. Do you think it is because they have been so slow in awarding merit to images? I really don't like the idea that our "Favoring" a photo influences their judgement.

8/13/2013 10:02:45 AM

The thing is, many of us don't have time to go around "faving" photos, or chasing votes. I'm dealing with an Alzheimer's patient and all the chores he used to do, so this is the last thing I want to have to worry about.

8/13/2013 10:12:02 AM

If this is true, then that will do it for me. It makes me downright angry. I live out here in the podunks and no one I know is on BP and even if I HAD friends on BP I would never ask them to "favorite" my photos. I would be offended if they asked me to do the same. It is politics plain and simple and another way for BP to get exposure. I already have my photos in another gallery so it is not the gallery aspect that interests me. I have admired the contest for years and finally got up the nerve/courage to enter it. If the judging is going to be based on some sort of popularity contest then the whole thing is bogus.

8/13/2013 11:02:16 AM

I don't like this new development either, but I truly don't think it will change anything in the long run. I suggest we sit back, relax, and do the same thing we always have - favorite the images that really speak to us. I have never had many favorites on my images - probably 3/4 of my entries have zero favorites. Fine with me. I have always felt the few I did have really meant something - not always that someone adored an image because I recognize that people favorite for different reasons sometimes, but something. Jim has said the bottom line will still be the judges' opinion - perhaps favorites will get them to look carefully at a few images they might have missed or dismissed in the past, maybe that's a good thing. And as I said at the beginning, I don't really think this will change anything. At least that's what I've decided to choose to believe :)

8/13/2013 11:08:46 AM

This makes sense. The other option is a "peoples choice award" each month. For example: I will not mention the name of the photographer but the flower she entered in June was breath taking. She had loads of comments and favorites but it only was a finalist and not a gold winner. I was very surprised. Outdoor photographer does this in their contests but the grand prizes are strictly decided by the judges. However, if they (BP) are having difficulty keeping up as it is, another category would be devastating. Bottom line, I hope that this cheerleader mentality of the favorites goes away. Thoughtful messages and encouraging words mean so much more.

8/13/2013 11:29:06 AM

My biggest concern is that members of my yahoo group said it's possible to "LIKE" your own images.. and it's possible to do it several times... Which means a person could just spend all their time liking their own stuff over and over again to try to boost their chances at getting a closer look from the judges... I do NOT like the idea of more LIKES on an image in ANY way influencing the contest... Maybe do a "People's Choice" winner too... But do not mix the two!! I wish they would do polls asking whether members like ideas before they make changes...:(

8/13/2013 11:29:28 AM

Ask our opinion?? Or listen when they get it?? Not happening.

8/13/2013 12:18:04 PM

Sounds like Jim is asking us to help do the judges job! Not a good idea at all to have favs help pick an image for EP's and so forth! Down right shamefull!

8/13/2013 2:53:50 PM

...and when the heck are they going to get on with judging images for EP's? Nothing like being stuck in the middle of two months...

8/13/2013 2:55:07 PM

Now a popularity contest?! What fun: trolling for votes. I'm only sorry BP now thinks its judges can't make a decision on the merits of the images alone. Really discouraging ...

8/13/2013 3:20:19 PM

I would suggest that the new "fav" endeavor is a strictly business proposition. The more hits that BP gets the happier the advertisers are. Participation has been way down in BP land recently. In promoting this, however, the contest loses what authenticity it once had. Sad to see what has evolved over the last few years!

8/13/2013 5:20:01 PM

I think we all sometimes get worked up over minor things... We like things the way they are and don't care for change, but like with all things, we will adjust... I don't know about you guys but I have to keep remembering that if I didn't enjoy it, I wouldn't do it.. and overall, I really enjoy BP and the contest... It keeps me shooting thing I know I wouldn't if there was no contest.. And for that I am thankful, if I get the judges attention, with or without favs. on an image, GREAT... I'm glad I did... I try hard not to to take the contest or myself too seriously here... In the end what does it do but make us mad or feel bad... Keep playing along cause you enjoy it..:)

I don’t like it (Contest update from BP - “Judges now consider the Favorites count on contest entries”) either, it’s difficult to comprehend that the Pro judges will need/consider favorite counts.... to me it’s a dilution of unbiased and efficient judging process. Will wait to see how it unfolds .....

8/14/2013 4:03:12 AM

Wow, guess I've been away too long. I do still enter/upload photos occasionally but haven't noticed the changes. I did look at the link below the Finalist button as shared in a previous post. The placement didn't bother me.

I recently entered a couple of photos into the contest. IMHO they are both worthy of at least an EFP. If neither get one then future entries would seem pointless to me.

The contest should be completely anonymous and should not be judged on who you are how how much judges like your work or how many favs you get. Too bad people have to watermark their images to prevent theft. For the contest I leave the watermark off. I did do that for a short while a few years ago but dropped the habit. I prefer to think my photos have won on their own merit.

As for BP in's still the cleanest site for having a gallery. I do wish it was a little less expensive.

8/14/2013 6:28:51 AM

I do not like the favorites aspect of the contest. I "faved" my own photo just to see if it could be done and it can. I then "unfavorited" it right away. So much for that. I just hate to see the contest turn into a popularity contest not to mention an advertising ploy. It cheapens the whole experience for me.

This whole favorite thing is pretty stupid. What if someone has a potential Grand Prize winning image, but gets no favorite attached to it?, will that photo now be considered no good, thus not even getting a Finalist..

There are people on here that are more popular than others, so if BP now considers favorites as determining a winner, we are going to have the same people win month after month after month based just on their popularity.. Yeah, that's the way to make people happy..

Images should be judged on talent not selecting hearts to pick favorites.. This is not high school to see who or what is more popular...So lame and ridiculous

8/14/2013 5:52:59 PM

That's funny...I get e-mails from BP all the time and a lot of them are polls asking what we think about proposed changes they may make. Is it possible a lot of you have asked not to receive e-mails from BP?

8/15/2013 6:11:59 PM

At what point are the favorites considered? Before the EP? Or after the Finalists have been announced?

8/16/2013 2:43:04 PM

Nicholas, My druthers definitely didn't include adding "favs" as a component of the contest. I am not convinced that what members have to say are actually taken into account in spite of the warm, fuzzy feeling asking is supposed to inspire.

Robert, that's a very good question!

7/31/2013 8:06:34 AM

oops - great minds and all, Sharon. I just started a more general discussion on the recent changes. Perhaps you want to paste this in that one, too?

7/31/2013 8:22:27 AM

I hadn't noticed that yet, Sharon, but I don't like it, either. Even if they were to put a break and space in so the link was centered under the badge and then the description was clearly separate, it would be better IMO.

7/31/2013 8:59:27 AM

Jay at BP is working on fixing the glitches I mentioned earlier. I'm so impressed and grateful for his speedy response to my email this morning. I sure didn't expect him to be on it so quickly. He has made one change already but I have requested he look at it from our point of view and to make further changes. I will keep you all posted when they are fixed.

7/31/2013 11:28:52 AM

7/31/2013 4:07:47 PM

  85 .  Favorite photos?
I just noticed that I can no longer "Fav" a picture if the person is using the older version of galleries. Is this a glitch? In the new version there is a button to Favorite pictures, but in the old version it is no longer where it always has been under the title of the image...

Looks like one of a few changes, since they went to the "all white" layout. In "thumbnail" view, that Favorites tool is gone. If you open the image to full size, there is a little red heart icon to Favorite it.

Whether you like this change or preferred the older text version, maybe you could comment on this change in this discussion I just started, Jill.

I believe it is your imagination... I just uploaded my usual kind of file (pre-sized to 800 pixels on the long side) and it stayed 800 pixels after upload.

7/28/2013 8:12:17 AM

Maybe it's all the blank white space at the sides of the page - makes things seem to float. And I'm really missing the arrows that allowed me to go through the images in a particular place (club gallery, Recent Entries, Finalists) pretty easily at full size. If they don't change this back, I will be doing much less commenting as using the browser back button is way too time consuming.

87 .  what are the changes with BP
Why has BP changed so much? Have been gone due to illness, but I am back now and don't know if we do everything the same. I have entered contests and some are good, but no one makes comments under your photo's like they used and EP's are few and far between. Also it seems that many of the people that we were on this site have left. So what's the new system for EP's.?

7/27/2013 3:23:31 PM

This has been discussed in some EP threads.... nobody knows why they are given so infrequently and unsystematically, and this may be one of the reasons why some people have left.

I empathize you both. I have found that the editors are not looking as frequently. Perhaps they are only meeting once a month to review images. Comments are also few and far between even for folks who have picts in the finalist category. Not the same old BP anymore.

If you want to remove or move your pictures to another place (in my computer), what do you have to do. Some of mine are older and I don't have any copies except in BP.

7/28/2013 3:57:11 PM

You can't get full size photos back to your computer from this site: you can download thumbnails and you can use Windows Snip or other software like that to 'make a snapshot' of the page with your photo open, so you'll get your photo of 800 pixels wide.

Joanne, I seem to recall awhile back, that one BP member had a fire and lost all his photos. He contacted BP and they were able to provide soft copies of images from their server. I don't recall the size of the images; they may have been the ones converted to 800 pixels. It's worth a shot...contacting BP direct.

Agree with Usman, 12 years being a BP member and 7 years into the contest – still like it!!

7/29/2013 9:55:41 PM

What's here to enjoy any more, especially in the contest? If images like this even don't get an EP because somebody is too lazy to look at them? I renewed my portfolio last year and got 2 years for 1, so I'll stay until these expire, but if the situation will not normalize, I'm done here. Starting from March 2013, this is the most uncertain period here that I've experienced since September 2007 when I joined. This site certainly does not respect its customers, thus I've lost all respect toward it, too.

I can understand where you are coming from I finally got me a photo that is really awesome, but I can only wonder if vacations, family matters or something is going on. Don't give up yet, I have been here nine years and have had only 2 finalists and alot of EP's, I just enjoy being with other photographers..
Surly something will give soon! Happy Shooting everyone!!!! I love it here toooo!!!

7/30/2013 12:26:07 AM

No it's not the same BP anymore. As a beginner I was greatly encouraged by the EP's and it helped me to learn what made a good image. Now the EP's are few and far between. I've even had one given and taken away again!

I have a feeling that they have cut back on staff and I wouldn't be surprised if the company folds altogether.

10/30/2013 4:46:38 PM

Change is something you can affect! I don't mean by clamoring for changes in BP, but by participation. I have come back here after several years away, and it seems like the same site to me.

What I think would be positive for individuals to do is dedicate some time to interact. Like you are here in discussion, certainly, but also in looking at and commenting on other photographers work. It does not need to all be up to the management and staff to provide feedback. This is a community after-all.

I suggest going and looking at some photo submissions and commenting on 2 or 3 a few times a week. You'll see interest on the rise.

I'm going to do it right now!

11/3/2013 10:32:52 PM

I comment many photos every day, but this will not affect the nature of the 'new' contest! Editors' Picks have been late since spring, and it seems that sometimes they are given randomly, but if a photo doesn't get it, a chance for getting a Finalist is gone.

"If images like this even don't get an EP because somebody is too lazy to look at them?"

I don't know that individuals are always the best judge of their own work. I know I have taken photos that I think are fantastic -- they fit my eye and perhaps I know more about the photo that makes it important to me -- and when I show it to others, they may not have the enthusiasm for the image that I do. But doubly it is hard to know what a judge is looking for.

I have judged photo contests myself, and I remember one time judging a contest with a Mr. George Lepp at a rather large contest, and he and I became a little at odds over the winner. Each of the 3 finalists were outstanding images, but it was a print contest... and I could point to obvious flaws in two of the three prints. Well, we did not agree, and a third judge had an agenda to push sports photography. I'll just say that in that particular case, the results became political.

My point here is that it is the editor picking. What they see and how they judge a photo may be quite different than your own opinion. What their criteria are and how they employ that can probably change day-to-day.

For example, in the shot you post the link to here, I can see why you like it. The subject is neat, as is the framing. But I also wonder if it is as sharp as it can be, or as colorful. Take a look at the example of the original and with a little enhancement that I am posting here. That is just my eye. The change alone doesn't make it a winner. But if I were judging hundreds of photos in a day, I might pass over the shot depending on what I had seen (really even what order I see them in!), and the potential that was not rendered. That is not an absolute judgement on the photo, it is how I look at them.

I am glad you are continuing to post comments on images, It is always nice to have some recognition. Maybe asking for feedback is a viable option as well? Members comments and constructive critique may lead you toward the coveted recognition of BP editors!

Good luck! And keep at it!

11/4/2013 7:51:28 AM

I prefer my version as the colors are more natural there. For my taste, many photos at BP are over-enhanced so that they don't look natural any more (green is too green, blue is too blue and textures are stronger than they should be...). But maybe this trend will die (e.g. some time ago, fractalius filter was very popular here, now almost nobody uses it). I have a bunch of finalists and 8 2nd place winners (2 of them from this year), the question is not in the number, but in the feeling that something changed in spring and now getting an editor's pick feels more like a lottery. Also, in spring Editors' Picks were often given a day or two after the photos were posted, but now it takes much more time (e.g. I recently got one for 2nd of October).

11/4/2013 8:16:25 AM

I agree with you that we are not always the best judge of our work. I also have taken photos that I thought were incredible and did not win an EP or finalist. But, then a random photo that I thought was okay won an EP.

I also agree with you about making positive comments on other's work. I decided that I enjoy getting comments from my peers, and I bet that they also enjoy getting positive comments. I am amazed at the talent of the photographers that submit. It is such a motivator to do better.

Before BP, I had little to no confidence in my work. I had such a passion for photography and creating something beautiful. But, now that I look back on my work I am amazed at the improvement of my work. I now work on photography everyday. I have to fight the obsession to do better. I love to learn and BP is an avenue to work harder at doing better.

The instructors have stretched me in patience, intelligence, and skill.

The difference between the two images that you compared were night and day. The end result was beautiful.

I understand what Tilia is saying about the natural look and wanting to keep it. But, there is nothing like an image with pop and the WOW factor.

Once again it is what each individual likes. It is definitely in the eye of the beholder.

Most of all, we should all have fun and enjoy our passion.

Thanks for your message Richard!!!

11/4/2013 7:37:33 PM

Tiia, I enhanced the image with no special filters or touchup, and just used what was captured in the image. I have access to less from the original capture than you because all I used was a screen shot. I corrected for natural light and sharpened. I don't use filters and plug-ins. All color and tone is natural, and simply pronounced from the capture -- not created.

Really nothing coming out of a camera is "natural". Every image is interpreted by the equipment and algorithms that convert the colors and choices made by the user as well as the quality of the optics. If you resist making an image looking as good as it might, you resist the accolades you might expect in competition. It is the photos that stand out from the crowd that get notice... and if you are more interested in being homogenous when it comes to processing, then you have to fight really hard to make a homogenous shot that turns heads with composition and subject. That ends up being your choice in competition, and with that probably decreases your likelihood of being noticed amidst the thousands of photos in the contest.

I am not trying to convince you that what I did was better... but I do think there is better sharpness and more color and contrast in the result I suggest. The image looks like it should be sharp... like something from National Geographic... It is fractionally soft, as if there is some camera shake. My suggestion is that attention to making an image what it can be -- rather than what it is -- will tend to catch the eye more easily, simply because the content of the images are less subtle.

I hope you find the balance you are looking for between dedication to your vision and people accepting that. It is often very difficult to achieve. On the other hand, I look at your gallery and there are many pictures there with awards and editor picks. You obviously have had some success on BP and see from your own gallery what it takes to compete.

Jane, it is good to hear feedback. I think your experience of improving through BP is the reason for the success of the site. Thanks for sharing your experience, and it is something I think other members will agree with.

Time to make some more comments!

11/5/2013 12:50:15 AM

I am not against adjusting image balance (saturating, increasing contrast...) as such. Cameras are not always perfect, even with filters. It's just how much of that to do on a particular image, and I prefer the level of colors etc. I see with my (not necessarily my camera's) eye. I don't like green, red... enhanced to a level it is never in nature. It's not so much a matter of this image what I don't like at this contest. It's the lottery aspect: I've participated since 2007, I've seen lots of below average images (mine and other people's) getting Editor's Picks and sometimes even other badges, I've seen better images getting ignored... and also I don't like inconsistency: getting 31 Editors' Picks in one month and 10 next month although the quality of images hasn't changed.

11/5/2013 1:07:48 AM

To try and put selection in the eye of the photographer... On some days I will find a particular subject fascinating and I'll shoot 100 pictures or more of it, and next time I might walk by it because something else caught my eye. I don't know that there is a definitive way to control how an editor picks what they are interested in on a particular day. As soon as you assign rules to it, submissions will reflect the rules rather than excellence, interest, or creativity.

Everyone's eye is different, as you suggest. I am constantly curious about how OTHER people see. For example, someone with color blindness might view a fall foliage scene rather differently than I do. Maybe they will not be so impressed... and perhaps moreso. If selection were obvious, it would not be a contest: the winner would appear and no one else would have to share their images. I hope you can stick to the fun of it and enjoy sharing the photography. To me that is most important. Sometimes I wish I could get into the contest myself! It seems like such fun.

Keep working at your images, and enjoy what you see when you can. Take a look at the excellent photos in the contest! you have to admit, in the end, BP does a great job of final selections.

11/5/2013 1:39:22 AM

Yes, most of the final selections are great (of course, again, it's a matter of who likes what: e.g. sometimes I like a 1st place winner more than a grand prize winner or a finalist more than a 2nd place winner etc.) but every image should have a chance to get an editor's pick if it is good, as otherwise, it has no chance to get a finalist or winner badge. Also, sometimes editors' picks badges are so late nowadays that some people have already deleted their photos from their galleries as they've thought they'd never get any.

11/5/2013 1:56:59 AM

I totally agree with Jane and would give most all of the credit to BP for continuously making my passion for photography a FUN one, and a learning exercise at that. I have learnt substantially from just looking at BP contest submissions, learning from the BP community (which is very open and giving) and also very much value the friendships I have made over the past few years.

And at the same time, I also agree with Tiia, that recently I have also felt frustration about the contest mechanics which has become more of a conundrum lately.

I believe that as long as I am learning new things accompanied with a fierce competitive spirit, and most importantly doing all this in FUN, I am happy shooter.

The day my camera feels "heavier" in my hands and the mesmeric sights and wonderful subjects in this beautiful world become uninteresting will be the day I put it down. Good thing is, I don't see that day coming anytime soon!!!

11/5/2013 2:35:27 AM

It's still the same old BP selection process, the shotgun approach. They just don't always look. It's just that now, with the EPs or lack of them, we can see it. If you look at the number of photos being submitted, compared to previous years, you will see it is WAY down. Back to the level of maybe 5 or 6 years ago, so people are, if not leaving, not submitting either. It is frustrating, especially with the no resubmits edict.

11/5/2013 2:51:05 AM

I don't understand why some would suggest that the editors aren't looking at photos, isn't it entirely possible that they are looking and just don't like what they see. Isn't it possible that maybe they weren't looking when so many were given out and they just gave them to keep folks happy.
When I look at others photos, I look for the wow factor, and when I find it I wish that I knew how they did it, because many of mine lack it.
A lot of my photos get passed over and yet some that got passed over here I entered into our state fair and won it truly is in the eye of the beholder.

11/5/2013 4:42:23 PM

Here's an example of why we say they aren't looking: Last month they had only done less than the first 10 days of the month EPs on the day the Pre-
Finalists came out. Now you tell me how they could go through at least 20 days worth of shots in one day??? I (an many others say it couldn't be done if they were looking, as Jim claims, at each and every photo!

11/22/2013 5:14:52 AM

11/22/2013 5:17:51 AM

Maybe they look at every photo of people who are paying for courses or who are their friends... for me, October has been a record low month: 5 EPs so far (despite entering 1 every day) and I've got nothing for November yet....

11/22/2013 1:38:51 PM

I beg to differ here. I believe the judges look at all the full size images, however, sometimes they rush through them due to paucity of time and that could result in some images not being rated properly.

And I also disagree with the assumption that any undue favors are given to the BPers who are enrolled in BP courses or are their friends. This is pretty evident by looking at the quality of Finalists and Winners each month.
Of course, a GOOD photographer will have better chances of winning the contest since they enter excellent images consistently and not because they are friends with BP or take courses from it.
By the way taking courses, here at BP or other places, is sure to help improve ones photography and that could result in getting more Finalists and Winners with time.

11/22/2013 7:22:48 PM

I agree, that courses have nothing to do with finalists or winners. I just can't see them having the time to look at everything given the amount of time they are spending passing out EPs (round 1) and having to go through more rounds before they get to finals. There just isn't enough time in one day for them to do all that.

11/23/2013 1:51:19 AM

Wow...excellent discussion here. I was starting to feel a little sorry for myself because I wasn't receiving as many EPs as fact none in the last few weeks. But then, I have to admit...the winners are often amazing and it makes me want to work harder to improve. Good luck everyone.

12/8/2013 2:08:06 PM

Tiia, Your comments were in my mind. I have only been a member for a month or 2. I have looked at new and old winners. I understand BP has clearly noted that great photo sometimes will have to be eliminated (very fair and totally understandable, but I am very surprised by some of the winners. I have curated my shows and know a good photo when I see one. I am surprised to see photos that lack creativity (maybe I expect too much because I am an artist) and I am surprised to see so many staged photos that have been over "air brushed" to look like post cards (which require talent of course) win, but I would love to see more photos that involve newness, new styles, good composition (many daily picks do not show excellence - just my opinion of course).

I have often wonder if only people who take courses win.

I just can not see or feel some of the winners as being excellent.

Why has Editor's Pick changed? I don't see nearly as many as I used to.

That's the big question - just let me assure you that it's nothing personal. Starting in March, every member has seen a huge drop in the number/percentage of entries that receive EP's. The timing is quite different, too. For example, they are only up to about June 21 or 22 as I write but they have also started July and done at least through the 3rd. AND they have been known to go back and pick up a few previously skipped entries some months, too. So the bottom line is it's not over until the Finalists come out. "Courage!" as they say in French.

  89 .  June 2013 Countdown Thread
This thread used to be known as Cocktails and Chocolates when I first started to follow it...I think both would be nice right about now. It's five o'clock somewhere in the world, right???

New rules for the contest have done away with the ability to resubmit an image unless drastically altered. That makes things a bit trickier when I have travel planned, and well, just because I've often had resubs turn into finalists (last month for example). So, adjusting to the change is what needs to be done.

I can't wait to see everyone's hopefuls!

Helpful hints for attaching photos into Forum Threads:
1) Sign into BP completely (name + password.)
2) If you have NOT YET entered the Contest today, you can use the "Photo ID" to pull an existing image from your Member Center into your reply to this thread (avoiding a duplicate image upload.) Get the Photo ID# from your Member Center, come to back this thread, click Respond, enter the text of your reply, then choose "1" from the images-to-attach drop-down. Click Submit; at the next screen populate the "Photo ID" box at the right. Skip the other fields on that screen.
3) If you HAVE ALREADY entered the Contest today before replying to this thread, you can't use the Photo ID method today. You can either wait until tomorrow to reply here (before your new Contest entry!) or, upload a new copy of the particular image (from your PC) into this thread. This produces a duplicate image in your Member Center; however, you don't have to make that duplicate visible in your Gallery.
4) If you're uploading a duplicate, maybe title it "For Forum" so it stands out in your Member Center, for easier housecleaning later... This can help direct viewers to find the original image in your gallery, when they want to leave a comment. Likewise, if you want to add a comment to a photo seen here, try to tell if it is a duplicate upload. As a courtesy, try to find the original image in the member's gallery and leave your comment there instead of on the duplicate---that way, if the duplicate is deleted later, the comment history isn't lost.

Good luck everyone!!!

My June entries are from page 1 - "Lost in Her Thoughts v2" to "k"

I have several favorites and some that will not be entered again since they are resubs and the rules have changed. So, I'm crossing fingers, toes and ankles!

Meanwhile, I did receive my first EVER POTD in June. I guess that's my pick to hopefully make finalist.

Smiles to all!

Back inside the slot canyon, with a light sepia tone applied. I loved the up-swept feel of the ridges,
and the overlap as the passageway winds around the sculpted wall.
Here's one of my top favorites/hopefuls from June. (I had 4 resubs in June, before the "rule change" came out -- it will be interesting to see if they are 'grandfathered' in for consideration.)
Best of luck for everyone's entries!

Remember this thread's original purpose... to share your personal favorite here, or your most hopeful for a contest medal---regardless of EP status. (Particularly ignoring EP status, since they aren't even done reviewing June entries at this point.)
It isn't so much about trying to predict which way the judging will go on your entries, or picking a favorite from just your EP's -- but rather, what you're proudest of, or would most like to see receive some contest recognition (whether or not, in the end, it actually does.)

Good point, Chris.
This is my fave.

7/17/2013 6:58:53 PM

I like that interpretation, too. I would say *especially* if a fave has been passed over for an EP, this thread is a great place to share the image and give it some limelight.

The Huon Trail is the perfect touring route to take you around the area to the south of Hobart, Tasmania, Australia. In just a 20-minute drive, you will find a world of extensive and serene waterways, wild coastlines, quiet farmlands, boutique vineyards, and rugged but accessible World Heritage wilderness.

The reflection is falling on the top of our vehicle that we rented.

Thanks for the reminder, Chris.

Lots of faves to choose from, I have also sprinkled resubs here and there among my June entries but I am picking the above fresh one since it makes me happy whenever I think of this place. So beautiful, so peaceful so calm. But its been a while since I picked right!!!

If any of you would like to take a peek at my June entries, they run from "Looking Up" on page 2 of my gallery and end with "Cross Nut" on page 3.

Good luck to all in June contest.

Thanks to my friends in the FFFP Club here at BP for their advice on getting the shadows, brightness and texture just right.

This is a three image composite (the background which includes the trees and sky with glow, the barn and ground that stretches across the bottom, and the August blue moon) with a fourth image (close-up of inner cover of an old book) overlaid as a texture.

Well, my favorite is a resub, too - and I'm with Chris. I certainly hope they don't impose the new "no resub" policy retroactively on the June entries! Good luck, all.

In-camera abstract effect. The subject is an array of green bottles.
Afternoon light was striking them at an angle that made the tops
of the bottles appear as oval rings of light. Combination of slow shutter speed
and camera movement created the squiggly tubules of light.
Minor adjustments in CS5.

Well, June was not a very prolific month for me ... I only submitted seven photos, but six got an EP, so I am definitely pleased with that.

Hard to choose a favorite, but I think this one makes me happiest to look at ...

You guys are all very talented and I wish each and every one of you the best of luck in the contest!

I almost had a new record for me, with 7 this month; but one is actually a pre-existing Finalist from May, that I inadvertently resubmitted into June before I knew it made May Finalist.

Susan, correct. I think 14 (or 15 June) was the last date. I can't prove this, but I think BP rotates who selects EPs for each month. And the June EP picker(s) may be running a little late whereas the July picker started earlier. That could explain why there are simultaneous EP trails.

  Hi All,

First of all... HUGE congratulations to all the outstanding June finalists and all the best in the next round.

I hate to bring this up during our celebration time and on this EFP link but I'm taking a break from BetterPhoto and I need your help for changes while I'm away.

Has anyone else noticed the changes to a finalist, second place winner and I assume first place and grand prize winners pages?

I don't know if it is the same thing Bob mentioned or not.

Here's an example:

>Contrast of Colors

If you don't like the change would you please notify BettrPhoto and ask them to change it?

7/31/2013 7:41:54 AM

  Your finalist is gorgeous Sharon....

Have yet to get to check them all!

And yours too Cheri!!...hope get to get to them ALL within the week..

jo annc.

( I so wish we all would move our finalist and winners to the front of our sight, then I could comment on them without searching other than just go to your sights) Would be much

Congrats to all finalist and hope they go even further...

Jo Ann you can. Go under My member center. Click on My Photos then click on Photo sort order. There can you can move them however you want them.

7/31/2013 8:51:29 AM

I do, I just didn't get any this month personally, but sure are some super pictures out there!

jo ann c.

7/31/2013 8:53:58 AM

Thank you very much Jo Ann, I know what you mean. I have a hard time finding people's monthly finalists and winners as they are all over their galleries. If they are moved forward to the front of the gallery we could find them easily and then they would get more comments. Like you I go to the person's gallery not through the contest winners section.

7/31/2013 9:05:31 AM

I move any I get to the front of my gallery for a few days, too - always feel a little "boastful" when I do, but like JoAnn and Sharon, I find it such a convenience when I visit friends' galleries that I decided long ago to "return the favor" LOL

7/31/2013 9:29:11 AM

  I am unashamedly boastful, LOL!
I move my finalists and winners to the front of my gallery and leave them there ... it gives me encouragement when I look at my own gallery! :)

7/31/2013 10:00:11 AM

I didn't set my gallery up that way in the beginning so haven't a clue how to change things without messing up. Not that it matters anymore, but maybe some day...

7/31/2013 11:11:34 AM

Jay at BP is working on fixing the glitches I mentioned earlier. I will keep you all posted when they are fixed. I'm so impressed and grateful for his speedy response to my email.

I like that for all the reasons you guys listed but also if a potential customer visits (I have links to BP from most other sites)then they see my "best" work. At BP anyway. Of the few pieces I've sold from FAA, none went past EP :/

Yep, I got one for August 1st, as well. It seems like they stopped July's at the 7th. I haven't seen anyone post anything beyond that.

8/2/2013 1:17:36 PM

They have long had a pattern - not every month but frequently - of starting a new month before the old one was finished. I have speculated that they take turns making picks and work by the month - that would account for one person's not being done but another's being ready and raring to go LOL

8/2/2013 1:28:27 PM

I did not get one EP during the month of July : 0

8/2/2013 4:41:34 PM

  Nancy Marie,
My last July EP was on the 6th. Not one since then. Jill reported one on the 7th. No one else has yet. I am sure they have not finished with July. They will not skip giving them for 4/5 of the month! Hang in there - you will get some - and so, BP willing, will I :)

8/2/2013 4:46:35 PM

Okay, I horribly confused. They've stopped picking EP's on July 7th. Does that mean they are done for July or is it because they have different judges for the two months?

8/2/2013 4:58:32 PM

Thank you, Nikki- you always make me feel better!

8/2/2013 5:08:12 PM

Here we go again..... This is what is frustrating. We are in August yet only the first week in July has been judged. If I had done my job like this I would have been fired. I am retired now so I can do what I want, when I want. I love BP but not this part of BP. I find it nerve wrecking. I miss the immediate feedback. It was not always what I wanted but at least I knew where I stood.

8/2/2013 5:08:18 PM

Just an observation and totally my point of view but I do believe that the quality of the entries are better than ever. Could it be that people are working harder and putting more thought into what they enter since the judges are so unpredictable? Still, it is frustrating not to find out anything for so long.

8/14/2013 5:05:51 AM

Has anyone sen the new Snap Shot email? I got mine today and BP is now taking into account how many times "favorite" get marked on photos. Here's the info on it.

Great news about BetterPhoto's free monthly photography contest! Judges now consider the Favorites count on contest entries. So if a photo gets Favorited 100 times, or even 10 times, the pro judges will see that figure and take it into account. However, we want to emphasize that the judges will still make the final call. For example, an image with a high number of Favorites is not guaranteed contest success. Likewise, a stellar image with a lack of Favorites could rise to the winners circle!
Not sure how to Favorite your favorite photos at BetterPhoto? It's easy! Go to Jim Miotke's short-and-snappy video. Then have fun finding inspiration, favoriting images, and taking part in the Web's best photo contest!

That's it for this week. Have fun with your photography!

Kerry Drager
Newsletter Editor

Not sure what to make of this. I know I don't have the time to go thru all the entries to mark favorites.

8/14/2013 5:53:19 AM

Maybe it's my slow internet, but Jim's snappy video was not snappy :-) It keep starting and stopping and repeating :-) I found that if I favorite on the thumbnail version of the pictures it works. If I try it on the gallery version it just goes to the next picture...
BTW, thanks for all the favs today, it's appreciated. I have been giving them out all along for many years myself :-)

8/14/2013 2:01:57 PM

I also noticed you cannot see how many favorites you have unless you use the new version of galleries...I personally like using the old version, too bad they cannot get the favs to show up on the old ones too...

8/14/2013 2:04:40 PM

I think the whole favorite thing is silly. When I see a photo that speaks to me I take the time to write a comment. What is even more silly is that there are some people who actually buy into the idea of racking up "favs" by going through the galleries hitting hearts in hopes others will do the same for them. I will continue to write messages of praise for those wonderful photos that strike a chord in me. But please, favorites? Give me a break.

8/14/2013 2:35:39 PM

The addition of favourites to the contest might be a first step in response to sites like 500px where the status includes views, likes, favourites, comments and there's an overall rating called 'affection'. FAA also has ratings for Favourites and Votes. So BP is catching up to the current trend.

Some of you are already there at these sites, so this might be old news.

Not a fan of the favorite photo thing. It's like other contests where all your friends vote for you to win. Not a fan of that either. I give comments when I have time. And besides I think ALL the photo's in the contest are awesome. Too many great photographers on this site to choose and pick.Just my humble opinion...........

I totally agree with Harriet..

So lame

8/14/2013 5:45:00 PM

I'm already pretty much out the loop, but I would hate to win just because I have a delightful personality and people like me! lollllllllllllll

Hopefully, that Favorite Flag won't get saluted when raised (old advertisement test.)

8/14/2013 5:53:46 PM

I don't enter the contest much, but I would never ask fellow photogs to "fav" my images. This is just one more change that makes me feel that I won't renew my membership when it's up. Too bad I already paid until July 2015 with the twofer promotion they had sometime ago. Ah, well.......

8/14/2013 6:03:17 PM

I agree with Jill, it would be nice to be able to see the faves on your own photos no matter what type of gallery you have ... especially if they are going to have some bearing on contest results.

8/14/2013 7:29:05 PM

There is nothing wrong with marking a photo as a favorite and there is nothing wrong with knowing how many of the favorites you have. What is wrong is the favorites becoming part of the judging process. It is neither professional nor fair.

I don't know about 500px, but the favorites and votes on FAA are counted in contests that are run by members/member groups. FAA does not have, to my knowledge, contests judged by pros.

The favorites have been at BP for quite some time. BP is not just getting caught up with a trend. Member voting is popular opinion based and is quite arbitrary, favoring members that have the time to pursue "likes" while putting those who don't at a disadvantage. Pro judging is based on certain baseline criteria that, aside from a subjective factor, can be defined. I can go to "How to Win a Contest" and learn what to strive for in terms of quality in order to achieve a skill level that will hopefully produce winners. This does and has advanced my skills and improved my photography. Is BP gonna add a "how to get more fav's" to that criteria?

No offense to BP members, whose feedback I value immensely, but I can't think of any way in which member fav's enhance those same objectives of learning and improving knowledge or skills. There is nothing wrong with popular opinion but it is an entirely different thing than pro judging/feedback. For me that is a big factor in why I value the contest at BP versus other sites.

What is more upsetting is that they are saying, "well, more fav's MIGHT help you win! (or might not!). Which just makes me feel jerked around. If the decision is ultimately up to the pro judge, irrespective of the # of or lack of fav's, why even factor them in? So that members (those who have the time) will browse and fav more in the hopes it helps their images progress? And is BP just going for more traffic/page hits to the site or is it because it's just FUN? (smh)

As it is, we don't know why the judges choose what they do. I've heard many say that feedback would be helpful or instructive. Now, we won't know if an image was chosen because favorites gave it more weight. Does anyone else feel like adding that popularity contest factor will cause animosity or resentment?

Sorry to be so long winded. I've been trying to find something good in this. I can't and I am sooo disappointed :(

8/15/2013 3:35:27 AM

In one of the memos there was sort of a hint that maybe you could get all your Facebook buddies to favorite your shots. Just another way to get people to look at BP overall. It's a damn shame that we have to be used that way. No matter what their reasoning, we don't have to like it. Many of us just don't have the time to go around chasing votes. It remains to be seen what effect that will have on us.

8/15/2013 4:20:08 AM

It's enough that I'm spending so much time going back and forth between 2 months to see if my images have yet received or not received an EP and reading all the general comments. There is little time left to "Fave" images, let alone leave comments on them.

The latter is what I miss most; there is so little following the EP links posted in these monthly threads in order to leave comments on our fellow members' images.

Some days, it feels as though BP has turned into the evil twin that nobody knew was lurking in the shadows. They've sure messed up the family.

8/15/2013 4:43:13 AM

I also considered maybe I'm being too negative? The positive could be that members would feel more involved in contest outcomes? Still, it's so random. Anyone else get some positives out of this?

Oh so I also got another email on Tuesday for a survey. It said, "Your answers will help me shape BetterPhoto's immediate future and make it into the best photography site... a resource that serves YOU even better!"

I've always appreciated that BP asks for our input. While I don't recall seeing anything about member fav's factoring into judging, I wonder if it was overwhelmingly asked for by the members? Things that make you go hmmmm.....

8/15/2013 5:11:29 AM

I'm also not a fan of favorites being used in the judging process. I see many images on BP that I admire and love, and I submit comments as time permits. I usually fav an image only when there's something I feel is truly unique that I want to remember, perhaps as future inspiration. That's just the way I do it - others would have different criteria. Counting the number of favorites an image receives goes back to the old popularity contest thing, which isn't fair or objective. I think Susan said it very well!

8/15/2013 7:01:21 AM

Susan, I dont think you are to negative. I have realized that our thoughts, suggestions or anything else doesn't count. That isn't negative, just the way things are. The old saying goes "it is what it is" During all the surveys those aren't the questions they ask about anyway. As for favorites, that makes it a popularity contest, not a valid one. I signed up for the two year and am very sorry I did. As long as this is continuing the way it is going I would never recommend this site to anyone. In fact I would do just the opposite.

8/15/2013 7:36:06 AM

I'm glad to hear that I am not the only one who thinks this is not a great thing.

Patricia, you are right about the thoughts and suggestions issue. I was ready to respond to that email right away and waited over 24 hrs before deciding if it was even worth writing an opinion.

I'm pretty sure the response to this will be that it won't make any difference. That if your image is still "worthy" it will advance with or without favorites. *shrug*

8/15/2013 8:36:23 AM

I have always faved an image that appeals to me because then I have a bookmark and can look at them again if I want to. I don't think faving a picture should have anything to do with whether it wins or not...
I also got that survey email and my answer to the question of wht I would like to see at BP ws that I would like more communication between the staff and members...Just my 2 cents:-)

8/15/2013 5:03:00 PM

I absolutely agree, Jill - more communication would be great!

Lemme know when they get to (or past) the 15th.....

8/18/2013 12:39:50 PM

Man, they are going to have to rush rush rush this month - I'm still stalled on the 12th and tomorrow is the 20th of the month. I see Carolyn had one for the 13th. Anyone else?

8/19/2013 6:05:15 PM

I'm getting really really really tired of this!

8/19/2013 7:25:19 PM

Nothing for me since July 11th, Nikki.
Hang in there, Bob!

8/19/2013 7:32:59 PM

  I'm hanging.

I'm going to The Mountain in the morning, that should perk me up... :-)

8/19/2013 7:37:06 PM

Have fun, Bob, and happy shooting! :)

8/19/2013 7:39:29 PM

I only had one July entry prior to the 18th so i'm still waiting for them to get that far! And yea, I gave up the daily routine since all this so i'm just spending time doing other photography stuff ;)

8/19/2013 8:03:44 PM

Maybe the judges have forgotten they didn't finish the month of July! I'm waiting for the 15th!

Get some purdy shots Bob!

8/19/2013 9:36:40 PM

I think they are past the 15th, at least in some categories. Not that I got any EP's but I think I saw some 17th EP's. I could be wrong and....where are they in August?

8/19/2013 9:47:15 PM

Carolyn got an EP for her entry from the 13th, but that was at least a couple of days ago; haven't seen anyone else report for that date. Mine did not get anything on that date either.

There is only one more entry for me on Aug 17, and I'm waiting for the 24, 25 & 31st of July.

8/20/2013 2:08:32 AM

It would be nice if they could keep more current on the EPs. When they were current, I found it educational to browse the contest entries and see which images got EP and which did not. Is there a way to browse contest entries for the previous month, or is that only possible for the current month?

8/20/2013 7:36:07 AM

Try the search box. It could be that you can get back to that month by plugging in "contest entries July 2013" or "archives July 2013"

8/20/2013 9:21:11 AM

Good idea, Carolyn. I tried it and got some entries, but I think they were just ones that had the search term in the photo description (one search returned 139 photos and another search returned about 300.)
Thanks for the response, though!

8/20/2013 9:54:32 AM

I had the same experience and found many images uploaded several months or years ago. However, I just found one that was uploaded on 7/31/2013 that has an EP badge on it.

Kathy, it's possible the image was uploaded on 31 July, then entered into the contest in early August, and got an August EP. That might explain what you're seeing. If I knew which image it was, I could check the August contest entries to confirm.

8/20/2013 10:58:42 AM

Ken, you're probably right (btw, it was 7/30 not 31st.) After a long week of photographing the Fair, I'm experiencing a whole lot of "Duh!" moments.

This is the image...

Kathy, thanks for the link. I did some digging in the August entries...found other images from 30 Jul 2013, with an EP. But I didn't see the one you listed, which clearly had an EP from the 30th.

It's still a mystery. It's possible they have handed out EPs for 30 July, but still need to catch up from 13/14 July. Or, all these 30 July EPs were entered into the contest in early August.

Harriet Feagin had an EP on her upload from 30 July. So, maybe we'll defer to Harriet to let us know if she entered it in early August. If so, mystery solved. If not, then it means BP has awarded some EPs for July 30th.

8/20/2013 4:03:34 PM

Once again, my forehead is imploding! lollllllll

8/20/2013 4:45:22 PM

Lordy, it's so simple, just finish July before you start August...doh! Why can't they do that?

8/20/2013 4:56:16 PM

Yes, I uploaded it on the 30th and entered it on the 1st. Now, do you all remember Debra Harder? I was wondering where her photos were so I dropped her a note. She left BP. She said that the contest was taking up too much time and energy. I can certainly understand this. I hate that she left because her photos were such an inspiration to me. I am sure she doesn't miss all this mess of trying to keep track of two months. Thing is the contest has been good for me in that I can see improvement over where I was two years ago. Still the latest developments are frustrating.

8/20/2013 5:15:08 PM

That is too bad about Debra (her work was outstanding.)

It's interesting that you mentioned seeing your own improvements. I feel the same way, having learned new skills (HDR - but not over-the-top, tone-mapping, bracket shooting, and other in camera skills as well as post-production.) It was so encouraging to feel like I was moving up - that just happened to coincide with little recognition at BP. I wondered what I was doing wrong. And, then - this miserable situation started with the Contest. This is really why everything photography-speaking feels like quicksand to me these days.

Totally agree with Joannie.. Just concentrate on 1 month at a time for EP's. This is not rocket science nor should one get so confused as to what picture from what month is getting an EP.

This should be simple. Enter an image for a particular day and month and 5 days later wait and see if you get an EP.. What a minute, that is the way it used to be.. Now they are doing 2 months at the same time and still 4 weeks behind the previous month. Makes sense to me to do what is "Normal"..

This should not be exhausting and or mind numbing... That is why people are leaving and or have left..

8/20/2013 5:37:04 PM

I figured this one had been skipped, since things had been reported for July 13. But apparently they weren't finished. An EP just appeared on this one, entered in the theme.

I've seen a few EPs for the 28th.

8/24/2013 2:39:19 PM

I have received EFP's through July 30th. The EFP's for the 26th through the 30th came recently. They weren't there this morning.

8/24/2013 3:49:37 PM

I have an EFP for the 31st. They've done a lot of catching up the last two days. I ended up with 19 EFP's out of 28 entries for July.

I last reported one on the 14th. I forgot to enter twice between then and the end of the year (22,27); got skipped on the 15, 17, 21, 24, 25, 28, and 29; got EP's on the 16, 18, 19, 20, 23, 26, 30, 31. Just over 50% for the second half of the month.

8/25/2013 5:16:01 AM

0 for 3 of mine for July. Not doing any better in August. If they skip the one on August 13th, I'll really be bummed. I just don't know what's good anymore.

It's really good to see that some of you are getting more EPs these days, but it's sad to see so many good photographers still being skipped over. Good Luck in the next round for those that were noticed.

8/25/2013 6:17:12 AM

Not a good month for me. Only 10 EPs.

8/25/2013 6:25:47 AM

  I got 10, too (out of 31 I entered)...

8/25/2013 8:10:25 AM

11 of 28 for me, the worst ever. However, I do see that the eleven picked were indeed better than the 17 skipped, save for a couple, maybe.

And Happy to see my eleven horses still in the race, and who knows maybe one of these crosses the line with the Finalists or maybe with Winners, touch wood!!!

8/25/2013 12:43:22 PM

I feel better after seeing Usman's totals. If HE can't get more than 11, there's something rotten in Redmond.

8/25/2013 1:00:46 PM

I have 15 EPs of 30 entries, which seems to be about how many of you are faring as far as percentages. I was just taking a closer look at these and did a little figuring. Of the 15 skipped, 5 were POTDs (and other such things) in other venues I've realized. Now, I wouldn't necessarily expect those to be finalists here certainly, and I have to say that none are among my absolute favorites, but really, I would expect them to be at least in the running with an EP here, which means simply that they are accepted as actual contest entries. But . . . The whole situation is pretty thoroughly peculiar now.

8/25/2013 1:22:42 PM

18 EPS out of 28 entries for me. About like some of the rest of yous.

8/25/2013 1:40:28 PM

When I used to enter pictures I like almost every day, my EP count might be between 14 and 30, which was pretty decent, imo. That's pretty much what you all are reporting. I was actually quite happy with that (I know the competition is fierce.)

So now, I'm only entering the ones I really like a lot or which should fit the category quite well, and am getting nothing. Trust me - those of you who are hitting the 35 to 50% mark should be thrilled.

8/25/2013 2:45:18 PM

I only entered 4 and got 3 EP"s. so far for August I have only entered 1 and probably won't enter a lot more this month.

Is there a place where you could view your contest entries of July or any previous months? I lost track and when July ended. I forgot to resort my images to what I entered before BP's Contest entries for the month reset to the month of August.

8/28/2013 4:31:47 AM

I don't think so, Ken. You could try the search box with "Ken Beatty July 2013 contest entries" and see what pops up, if anything.
I think they should show both the month that hasn't had finals yet and the current month you are working on. Would make life a bit easier.

8/28/2013 4:41:59 AM

Well, scratch that idea, it doesn't work.

8/28/2013 4:43:18 AM

Can't really help much here, Ken, but I can make a couple of suggestions for the future. Remember that I use the old gallery - may make a difference in terms of what shows. Anyway, the only way I have found to get an upload date showing on the image is to add a description at the time of the upload. Anything will do so I make it a habit to ALWAYS write "Category: People" for example. I usually write something else, too, because I like to talk, but at least that as it's always relevant. If I upload and enter the same day, that's it. If I upload one day and enter later - like when I'm going to be on vacation and won't have access to my hard drive - I do this and then the day of actual entry, I add in the information "Submitted on x date"
Hope this helps.

8/28/2013 4:58:59 AM

On the last day of the month I go to my "contest entries" and print out the page(s). I have done this for at least two prior months plus when I enter I put the date and the category each photo.

8/28/2013 6:32:13 AM

In my description on the image itself, the last info is usually the category and the entry date.

But, I also go to the "Your entries" and copy the whole box with the picture and entry info (Title, Category, Date) and save the entire month to a single doc. I'll go back and add "EFP" and/or "Finalist" right after the title to keep track.

I received 5 staff favorites. Could be an interesting change.

8/29/2013 11:32:36 AM

Thanks for adding the link Sharon. I am on my mobile....

I got two, also, but, IMO, not the best of my EPs. And, why give it a badge if no one can see it unless they go to a secret place where they are able to view it!

Forwarding this message from another thread:

Hi All,
Staff Favorites is brand-new - so new that it came too late for yesterday's SnapShot :)
Here's the scoop:

We added another round late in the contest judging process. During this new round, Staff Favorites are chosen. Finalists will be more selective, and are pulled from this new round.

Contestants will be notified if their contest entry is selected as a Staff Favorite. Then, if the image is later chosen as a finalist, the photographer will be emailed again.

Also, there have been questions about gallery display of the new Staff Faves badges. That should come soon (hopefully) ... meantime, it's being worked on.

Good luck, and enjoy the contest!

Congratulations everyone who received an award for the month of July and all the best in the next round!!! I'm so pleased I received one for my Himalayan Poppy.

I can't find the link to the new finalists so I can browse through all yours... another glitch for now! I'm sure it will be fixed soon.

I can't find it either Sharon! Hope it's sooner than later! :)

8/29/2013 2:28:53 PM

typo... so I CAN'T browse through all yours

8/29/2013 2:29:09 PM

They have the finalist page blocked. I sent an email.

8/29/2013 3:54:57 PM

One of my friends sent me an email with her finalist thread, but when I clicked on it , it gave me the BP welcome page, so I went in to the contest page and clicked on recent finalists, and it took me out to the welcome page again. Then I Rec'd a notice that I got a finalist, and the same thing happened- couldn't see any of the finalists- not the best time for BP to come out with a new format that is not working!

8/29/2013 4:51:12 PM

Congratulations to all the Finalists! One of my Staff Favorites moved to Finalist so I'm pretty happy about that :) I hope to be able to browse them all

Congrats to all the members who share here, like Tammy said, EP, Staff Favorite (SF?), Finalist and so on. Best of luck to all in the next round!

Why does BP have the July 2013 Finalist Picks page blocked? When I click on recent Finalist Picks, it bounces me to the BP home page.. Another mystery to be solved...

I noticed the staff favorite awards show now in our galleries.

8/29/2013 5:42:37 PM

I see staff favorite emblems in the old-style galleries, but not the new-style galleries.

8/29/2013 6:45:05 PM

Well, I searched using "Contest Finalists - July 2013". 300 images appear under that designation. However, those images are Finalists from different months and years. Oh, well - Congratulation to all of you who did well this month.

Here is the resulting Link from my search:

8/29/2013 8:02:21 PM

Congrats to all the Finalists! Hopefully they will get the link to the pages fixed so we can properly comment :-)

8/29/2013 9:47:24 PM

OK, so it's not just me having trouble finding the finalists. Good to know. Congratulations to everyone who got a finalist for July! I hope they fix that link. That's a big part of the fun, to look through finalists.

8/30/2013 9:18:59 AM

Finalists are finally posted in their regular place:

Congratulations to all and all the best in the next round!!!

8/30/2013 10:52:26 AM

All you July finalist, how did you enjoy the 5 minutes of recognition our finalist got? :-)

8/30/2013 6:01:45 PM

  NOT in the least!!!
