Has anyone contacted BP through BP Support? I will, but if I'm the only one, it's not going to be a strong message. I believe the wording should be calming, and not frantic or angry. Something like: "Many BP members are wondering why the March '12 finalists and winners are not on time. If there is something going on with BP, or if there is a personal crisis or emergency, please let us know so we can support you." If you agree with this message language, please respond on this thread. I believe that BP will see this quicker than if we send the regular BP support email.

I contacted them yesterday, asking if everything is okay. The response was, "Everything is great, the judges must be running a bit behind this month." I wish they would let us know what's going on.

Uploading self portrait on bio page!
Hi,I was wondering if anyone has had a problem up loading a photo to the Bio page. I've tried to start from scratch with the Bio page but that notice still appears on the web page. Why doesn’t the photo that I chose not appear with the others in the photo manager? You can see what I mean @ www.visionphotographique.com Thanks! André

What is Catch All category?
I tried looking for description on the catch all category in the photo contest. I am confused. Some pictures in the category can be fall either into landscape, or macro, or everything else.Thanks in advance.

Catch-All includes everything and anything a camera captures, or even something entirely created in editing softwares. Still life's usually also go in CA. UB.

It's sort of for anything that doesn't quite fit anywhere else, and is used sometimes when you want to not put two similar things in the same category. I used to use it for car shots a lot, but don't do as many of those as I used to. You can really put just about anything in this category.

Hi Betty; I view "Catch All" as BP's intended category for any images you enter which don't "clearly fit" into the other defined categories. I end up with a lot of architecture shots in there, whenever my entry doesn't seem to feel like a good match for either "Travel & Place" or "Elements of Design"... (Those are the two main categories I find usually cover most of my other architectural images.) But there's no stopping you putting a true, ideal landscape image into "Catch-All", instead of into "Landscape & Nature"... I'd just caution that, in theory, your category choice is something the contest judges pay attention to, in addition to the image itself---and you could therefore, in theory, harm your chances with a particular image, if it appeared to be "grossly" mis-categorized. But there's always an exception to every rule, too ;)

Thank you all so much for clarifying the category. Christopher, thanks for the headsup on "mis-categorized" photos. I was wondering about that as well. So, BP will NOT re-categorize your submitted photos if you accidently submitted it in the wrong category.

Correct... only you can assign your category... So if you accidentally load a formal portrait of a family member into the "Animals" category---well, I suppose it depends on the relative ;) --- but you're probably not likely to beat out any of the actual animal images submitted in that category. BP won't reclassify it for you, and they would (presumably) end up skipping over it as a poor choice of category.

March 2012 Countdown Thread
March 2012 Countdown ThreadIt's nearly mid-month again...in the US, this time it means our taxes are due. I'm not sure if that's the same elsewhere - although I hear from some of my friends abroad that our taxes aren't all that high and we should be grateful (HA! - tell that to my checkbook). Everything is beautiful and blooming here in Texas...I hope everyone else is enjoying your weather in whatever season you might be having. So, while we wait for the judge's choices, please post your favorite and let's see if we can choose/guess correctly this time. Helpful hints for attaching photos into Forum Threads:
1) Sign into BP completely (name + password.)
2) If you have NOT YET entered the Contest today, you can use the "Photo ID" to pull an existing image from your Member Center into your reply to this thread (avoiding a duplicate image upload.) Get the Photo ID# from your Member Center, come to back this thread, click Respond, enter the text of your reply, then choose "1" from the images-to-attach drop-down. Click Submit; at the next screen populate the "Photo ID" box at the right. Skip the other fields on that screen.
3) If you HAVE ALREADY entered the Contest today before replying to this thread, you can't use the Photo ID method today. You can either wait until tomorrow to reply here (before your new Contest entry!) or, upload a new copy of the particular image (from your PC) into this thread. This produces a duplicate image in your Member Center; however, you don't have to make that duplicate visible in your Gallery.
4) If you're uploading a duplicate, maybe title it "For Forum" so it stands out in your Member Center, for easier housecleaning later... This can help direct viewers to find the original image in your gallery, when they want to leave a comment. Likewise, if you want to add a comment to a photo seen here, try to tell if it is a duplicate upload. As a courtesy, try to find the original image in the member's gallery and leave your comment there instead of on the duplicate---that way, if the duplicate is deleted later, the comment history isn't lost. But I do love the one of Keshia the young model I used as my people model on Better Photo since she been nine years of age and now she seventeen. Keshia is working on singing career and her music will come out this year under the stage name of KING.

Deep inside the Khewra Salt Mines (2nd largest in the World) in Punjab, Pakistan.Stalactites and Stalagmites are natural formations in the caves of mountains having limestone/salt. These form when rainwater seeps through spaces in the mountain dissolving limestone/salt over time and dripping from the ceiling. The hanging ones are called Stalactites while Stalagmites are deposited on the ground. The lighted tower in the bg is erected of salt bricks.
11mm, f/22, 20sec.

My fave of my March entries was shot deep inside the Khewra Salt Mines, which is about 150 kms from Islamabad. It was a wonderful experience. basically traveling inside a salt mountain.Good luck to you all in the March Contest. UB.

OK, guys, here's what I do. Even though I have been uploading to this discussion on and off for years, I am never sure I will remember the steps from one month to the next. So I open the discussion in two windows. I leave Shell's instructions in one so I read and follow them easily, one step at a time, and I use the other to put my link in. Then I always breathe a sigh of relief when I come back to the discussion itself and see my image in there :)

The latest Finalist announcement was the 29th - back in 2006, announcing November's Finalists on 12/29/06.
There's also only ever been one on the 28th, and one on th 27th.

I have a new favorite and I put it first in my port it called Swimming Pool in Maine. Check it out..... My first favorite was Keshia on the bridge (First picture on the thread) and I had it removed from the contest because it was a second place winner and you have a chance of losing the badge if it does not make at least second place again. Hi Bill---you can do an "existing" upload to this thread---but it only works if you attach your existing photo here, before you go to make the day's regular contest entry. Once you make that contest upload, the feature for attaching existing photos into a thread, stops working until the next day (as determined by 12:00am PST.) Weird!

Hi Nikki, I put in five second place winners and than a member wrote to me and told me I could lose the gold badges if they did not at least place second again. I wrote to Better Photo and they were kind enough to remove them for me so they were not being judged again. You can look in my port and see the five I had removed. I have everything dated and I only have six second place ones and they are marked with March dates. They are in the top of my port. But they are not being judged.

The Spicebush Swallowtail butterfly (Papilio troilus) goes through 6 instars, or stages, of development before pupating. In the 4th instar this caterpillar is brown with white splotches, resembling bird droppings. The 5th instar brings a dramatic change to this colorful, almost comic, look. The large false eye spots help make the caterpillar look like a small snake, which helps keep away its main predator - birds.

a few days ago I saw Bob C. post on Kerry Dragers fb, asking if they forgot about us this month... One of our members sent an email to BP questioning the lateness. BP said that the Judges were just got behind time-wise, and that everything was alright. After that nasty debacle at Digital Image Cafe, I just wish BP would make some pro-active announcements BEFORE everyone gets wound up. The Judges' schedules are overwhelming? Fine - just say something. Be upfront. Our imaginations can created scenarios far worse than reality (unless there is a worse reality!)

Hi All, I've been a member since 2007 here at BP. I've enjoyed it immensely. My question, why would anybody want to throw BP under the bus b/c this is the first time in history that BP has been late? BP is not really late b/c they state winners will be announced by 12 midnight, April 30th. We are all just spoiled!! .Take a deep breath and have fun in the anticipation!!! Good luck to all.

Even if I dont get a finalist this has been a good month.. My Kentucky Wildcats won the NCAA Basketball championship, I found out that 3 of my pictures are going to be used for a book that will come out in September, I got approved for a week off next month to go home and see my family back in Kentucky. so all and all its been a good month.
OH and the biggest news. well at least for me was that I got an autographed basketball by the entire kentucky team... so that really made my month and year. !!!!!!!!!!

Great month for everyone and especially to you Tony, well just posted an inquiry in Jim Miotke's FB wall regarding our Finalist and Winner selection in BP, so I join in the discussion here too. I have been with BP since 2006 as a Birthday gift to myself and pursue a hobby I love, and get a different perspective on how to learn photography and have met a lot of Talented Photographers along the way, I love every minute I spend here because I see art in everyone's images and I learn a lot from each and everyone of you!

I love BP too just like so many here and I attribute much of my learning/knowledge about photography to fellow BPers whose work I enjoy most and get inspired from. We are in May but thats fine, it tells us that we will have two finalists announcement this month {hopefully}. And for me the past week or so, each morning I woke up excited to see the lovely Finalists for March and each night I went to bed anticipating the same. That was a good feeling for me. And Chris, you should change jobs and work somewhere as a master statistician!!! And Carolyn, your work has been an inspiration to watch over the 5 or so years I have seriously been involved here at BP. Well, I go out to shoot and try to get that Grand Prize winning image that is so very elusive, I guess there is still a long way to go, and I am happy to traverse that journey to the TOP, like so many of you, I know!!! UB.

I didn't say I was out of here because they were late. Someone said above they heard they might be closing down the contest part of BP. That's one of the reasons I love BP. I love the competition. I think that I have learned a lot thru competition. I don't mind if they are late. I just don't won't them to close down the contest!

Let's stay positive. I'm sure there is a good reason for the delay. I just wish they would be more informative on delay's or explaination on what is going on. I love BP and would hate to think they will stop contests.

I don't think they will stop the contests. It wouldn't be in their best interest to stop. They have always been non communicative about things that go on behind the scenes, so don't expect them to chime in, because they probably won't. (unless it gets ugly, which I see no signs of so far, at least not on this thread)

I don't think that there is any formal statement on thetiming of the contest results. We have to remember that this is bp's game. They can do as they want based on thier time table. Besides, not knowing is half the fun. The best part of the contest is that it keeps me shooting, inspired, and learning in photography.

I agree it is BP's show, and if they have any internal reasons for being late, so be it... As Carolyn said, we're not likely to hear from BP what those reasons may be.
However, to Errick's point, BP *does* state on the main Contest Page that March Winners will be announced by Monday April 30.
(Today it now says "April Contest winners will be announced by Thursday May 31.)
I'm sticking with my earlier idea---someone at BP thinks April has 31 days, and so we'll see them today ;) hehehe

I dunno Melinda; that seems a bit extreme to me... On the BP Help Page (for Contest), under the FAQ "When will we see the contest winners?"
it does say:
"The winners are usually posted by the end of the month." So clearly, they give themselves a little wiggle room. And as this is the first time in history they've missed their target deadline, I'm just not sure I see a reason for "compensation" ;)

Melinda---I'm actually quoting from 2 different BP pages... one says a date, the other, in the Help Files, says "usually by month end." I doubt either page has changed in years. And I think BP would state that the contest is a membership perk---you paid for access to the BP site and site content, and to display your images in a gallery; none of which is diminished by the contest winners' announcement being late. I hope you're kidding about feeling entitled to compensation on this, but in case you're actually serious, then I'm dropping the discussion on that particular topic, here ;)

Just thinking out loud ... before the end-of-month mark was missed, we thought we knew when the results would be out. Now that end-of-month has been missed, we really don't have a clue when we will see results. I think it would be nice if one of the BP "officials" (for lack of a better word) would pop in and give us at least an idea of when the results will be out. Then I could stop repeatedly and obsessively checking the page ... :o)

Over the years there have been issues that have come up where members voice concerns, and because of the silence on part of BP staff, things have gotten verbally ugly before, and people have quit participating here. The silence has always been a major factor in that. Again, we have silence from the BP folks. I am sorry that it goes this way, but one thing I learned here years ago, is that you can't let yourself take this contest too seriously. In the end, you are the only one who suffers from caring too much. Best of luck to everyone, and hang in there.

I have been a BP member since 2005. I am an amater in photography but during my membership here I have lerned a lot, just by looking at photos of others. Posting here became my daily rutine. What I like about BP is that your success doesn´t depend on equipment you have, or on the number of comments you get from others. It helped me to improve my skills and to keep moving my limits. About this delay...I believe they have a good reason, maybe we won´t get to know it, but I don´t think they will dissapoint us. We shouln´t be to critical about it. This is my first post on this discussion, although I read it every month. Kind regards to everyone!

I think it is pretty cool that so many of us are still excited by the contest, even after years of entry... Istill find it very fun to participate, and I'm continually blown away by the chosen winners. (I used to spend a few hours daily, several years ago, browsing BP entries, but those days of such ample free time are gone... so the Finalists & Winners become my "shortcut" to view some of the best of the best.)

I really like the Better Photo format for displaying my photos. I like photo discussion thread format, I like the forum and I like the BP Clubs. These are the reasons I pay to have Better Photo host my photos. I've been thrilled to have some of my pictures selected as Finalists and I've had some winning images but I am not on BP for the contest. Most months I enter only two or three images and often I don't even enter the contest. The contest is a nice perk but even without the contest Better Photo is a great photography hosting web site.
Good luck everyone; relax, the Finalist and Winners will be the same regardless of when their names are announced.

I have been a member here since 2002. I have watched them go from a free site to a paid site, from giving prizes to giving next to nothing. I like the site but if they stop the contest I will find someplace else to host my gallery. So many of the photography contest sites have disappeared over the years. it seems a shame to loose this, the oldest.
Hope this is just a one time glitch.

I am a relatively inactive member currently, but still stop by often to check up on everyone to see what they are doing. The contest is fun, and a confidence builder or breaker LOL. However, the point being, I appreciate the time and effort taken by the judges, to go through all submissions, it must be a daunting task. For me BP will always be a permanent part of my online activities. They do a great job!

I took the position a long time back... that BP is a fun place to come, make friends, learn, share, communicate with others who love and share this passion of ours... But the contest should be looked at as fun and entertaining.. Once we take it and OURSELVES more serious than that, it's not fun anymore.. At least not for me... That's why I guess I don't get too worked up when the finalists don't come out when they are suppose to.. I mean come on, the anticipation is fun too right!? It really is all in fun.. I was asked to guest-judge a camera club meeting once---it was a somewhat terrifying, very stressful experience for me! (Of course, they were all watching me, so that is very different than "blind" judging, I realize!) Still, I'm with you, Joan---I appreciate their time and effort! To have to sift through 12,000 entries a month is daunting indeed (and that's a low figure compared to a few years back at the peak - 40,000 entries!)

I have a slightly different take on the Contest. For me, it was a major learning tool. Unlike other contests, where you either won or you didn't, at BP I can compare my non-winners against those who receive Finalist and Win awards. Every entry is openly displayed at BP. What made Picture B "better" than my Picture A. When I figure that out, I learn. Sometimes, I don't "get it", but in the process of studying the winning images, I still learn.

That is certainly the heart of what BP is all about---learning and improving, in a sharing environment. All of my photographic knowledge and drive to improve stems from BP (and a BP book I bought back in 2005, that led me to this site.) Discovering the community that Jim fostered here was a huge plus for me, and I've been fortunate to meet many terrific photographers through BP, all joined in a common love of photography, and a desire to improve or learn new techniques. And to a person, all friendly, willing to share and help. And I completely agree with your take on the value of the contest... many times, winning images have inspired me to try new ideas or techniques, certainly to visit new places, and also to study what I reacted to in those images, to try and identify that "ingredient" so I could attempt to incorporate it in my own images. I suspect BP's primary revenue is from their courses, but I'm sometimes surprised the wide-open, month-long contest is still a (wonderfully!) free perk. (ie, when you consider the drain it places on the staff's hours, which translates as an "expense" to BP's operations.) Good luck to everyone in the March results... fingers crossed that it is hopefully just a few hours away!

I feel the same way as Kathy and Christopher, who both expressed it very well. I am a newbie in photography, and the contest is both fun and a very valuable learning tool.

I also enjoyed reading this thread! Thanks, Usman, for pointing it out. Just fun to know everyone has the same thing on their minds, lol!! And, I appreciate the positive posts. It's good to know everyone is keeping their hopes up, and not condemning BP for the lateness this month! Good Luck, everyone, it will be all the more exciting to see finalists and winners when they DO come out!! :-)

7 or so years ago, when I first joined BP, it would take forever to load a thread this long, but with technology now it's speedy - but, it's still humans that do the judging (THANK GOODNESS!) and we humans sometimes have life interfere with our best intentions to meet deadlines. I've never seen BP be this late, but I'm sure there's a very good reason (like, uhm, yes, being human). Meanwhile, I love all the activity on this thread. And who knows, maybe the judges are so busy reading our rants and our accolades and tasting our excitement and anticipation that they are just waiting us out. Pop open some more cocktails, grab another handful of chocolate and enjoy the ride! Good luck everyone!!!

I think they are getting ready to post the finalists. The ones from February are gone and there is nothing listed on the finalists page at this time! :-)

HMMMMMMMMMM at the top of the finalists page it says "Contest Finalists - April 2012" Does that mean there were no finalists and winners for March or did they combine March and April this time? It'll be interesting to see! ♫♪

I noticed that too Kitty!! Funny how we keep checking. Even my work mates who aren't photographers keep asking, "well, where are the finalists??". They know that by the end of the month I love to show off the finalists and winners from BP. Anyways, it's nice to see everyone chatting and banding together. I always read this thread but rarely comment here.

I have been reading the threads about the finalists being late and was thinking of posting a fav photo last night or tonight while I waited but now they have been announced. I received two finalists, one which I might have posted here as a hopeful (Jellybeans Galore) but the other one was a big surprise! Very surprising to see them come after the end of the month! Well, I am sure I won't get any for April because I checked, and I didn't enter anything in April! I thought I did but guess not. I have been really busy though and the month just flew by! Good luck to everyone and best of luck for April for those who missed out in March!

I got two, too, and for me also not the ones I was rooting for! But thanks to Michelle and others on this thread who have encouraged the re-sub process, one of them was a very old favorite from 2009. Congrats to all finalists, and good luck to all members, in the next round and the next contest. :)

Happy 200!! :) This thread that is, just hit 200 posts... I cannot remember the last time that happened, if ever! One silver lining to the delay in Finalists... brought a lot of first-time posters out of the woodwork and into this thread... Kerby, go to the top of this page, Membership, Contest. In the upper right corner of the page you will see a random sort previous winner or finalist. Under that you will see links to Recent Winners and Finalists and Previous Winners and Finalists. You can get there the same way from just about any page at BP.

I love BP, but hate their navigation system (My bookmarks for various screens is close to 20 specific links in a BP folder!) Every month, I go to My Member Center > http://www.betterphoto.com/mgAdmin/a_ProfileImages.asp > Contest Winners > All Contest Finalists > http://www.betterphoto.com/mgAdmin/a_ProfileImages.asp. And, break out in a rash because the latest Finalist List is still not published there! (Right now, it's only on February.) Thanks, Nikki - this is the first time I've actually found it. Why in Heaven's name would there be two roads to the same info in two different locations? Arggggghhhhh! lolllllllll

For the past several months, the Finalists seem to have been announced very late in the month. And, before I can comment on the chosen images (within one to two days, tops), the Winners are handed out. I'm not as fast as I used to be! lollll

Hello
The last day I uploaded a photo was on March 29the I tried to up load one yeterday the 30th and again today the 31st March but the message keeps saying I already entered on these dates, wich I did not ? So why is this happening please ? Thank you Dorothy Youst

Hi Dorothy, BP allows only one submission to the contest in a 24-hr period. The site won't allow anyone entering more than 1 image in a day. You may want to check which time zone you are in, and note the timings for your part of 24-hrs. I live in Pakistan and my 24 hr period of the day is full 11hrs ahead of the BP watch (ie., San Francisco's time). Try again and there should be no problem. Hope this helps.

about wording of copyright release
Someone has said that I should not say a copyright release, but I should say print release for the CD I offer. Which is the right

You can word the release for whatever it is you don't want them doing. Since you didn't say, I'm guessing you feel okay giving a cd with pictures but don't want them doing more than making their own prints.

I am ok with them using the CD for their own printing. I was told to add the info that the copyright was included so they could use it at what ever lab they choose. I give them a note so they can show it to say Wal Mart or other labs that require hard copy info. On the other hand I am not responable for the quality of any labs work except my lab. Do you think I should change the wording to print release.. my websit is www.dlthomasphotography.com and she said it was under Senior ording info.

You should add a release for printing. Preferably on some letter head if you have it.
If you don't do this as a business and don't have letter head, put some contact information with it because photo labs usually won't reprint photos if they think it's been done by professionals. It have to have anything that says copyrighted directly on it for them to decline reprinting them.

February 2012 Countdown Thread
In like a lion...okay, so not really so much a lion for our Spring here in the Southern US. Texas weather is a bit nutty and we've been up and down - but the last couple of days are nearly 80 degrees. In March...Yes - you read those numbers right. So much for a slow transition to the heat. Anyone still get snow up further North in the US or anywhere else on the planet - come on down to Texas if you'd like to escape the cold. Yikes!So, here we are, once again (ALREADY) finding ourselves in the middle of the month, and time to start wondering and waiting for what the judge's might have in store for us this month. February was a short month....although it was leap year and we did get one extra entry out of it. Here's to hoping it was lucky for everyone! Helpful hints for attaching photos into Forum Threads:
1) Sign into BP completely (name + password.)
2) If you have NOT YET entered the Contest today, you can use the "Photo ID" to pull an existing image from your Member Center into your reply to this thread (avoiding a duplicate image upload.) Get the Photo ID# from your Member Center, come to back this thread, click Respond, enter the text of your reply, then choose "1" from the images-to-attach drop-down. Click Submit; at the next screen populate the "Photo ID" box at the right. Skip the other fields on that screen.
3) If you HAVE ALREADY entered the Contest today before replying to this thread, you can't use the Photo ID method today. You can either wait until tomorrow to reply here (before your new Contest entry!) or, upload a new copy of the particular image (from your PC) into this thread. This produces a duplicate image in your Member Center; however, you don't have to make that duplicate visible in your Gallery.
4) If you're uploading a duplicate, maybe title it "For Forum" so it stands out in your Member Center, for easier housecleaning later... This can help direct viewers to find the original image in your gallery, when they want to leave a comment. Likewise, if you want to add a comment to a photo seen here, try to tell if it is a duplicate upload. As a courtesy, try to find the original image in the member's gallery and leave your comment there instead of on the duplicate---that way, if the duplicate is deleted later, the comment history isn't lost. I almost forgot again today, but tada - here's my February favorite. I'm usually a people, animals or flowers kind of girl...but this Eiffel Tower shot taken on our first evening in Paris is very special for me. I went along on a business trip to London and Drew surprised me by planning a detour to France. He also reproposed (after nearly 17 years of marriage) under the Eiffel Tower. So, here you go...my February fave.

The Main Reading Room at the Library of Congress opens to the touring public two days a year. The massive, 8-sided, marble-clad space is a marvel,
crowned by a giant dome and cupola, rising 160 feet above the floor.

Hope everyone had a fun weekend, and a good St. Patrick's Day if you celebrate it. I almost got pinched for not having green (forgot what day I was on in life).
