Thanks all for your generous comments. This little fellow (not so little really) is a red-headed sapsucker (a North American wood pecker variety). He normally drills holes in trees to feed on sap and insects. A suet block feeder is an excellent source of an easy meal. Otherwise, it would be very difficult to get this close to one. He has become a fairly regular visitor to my balcony feeder :-).

CAREFUL! We had some of these kill our sugar maple trees back in NJ! They're beautiful, but BOY do they do a number on the trees! The feeder is a great alternative!
