Sandhill Cranes during their fall migration at Jasper-Pulaski Fish and Wildlife Area in northern Indiana. Each fall, tens of thousands of these magnificent, noisy birds visit J-P's shallow marshes. Here the cranes are gabbing and socializing in Goose Pasture shortly before returning to roosting marshes at dusk. The crane count on 11/16/2010 was 11,954.

A fine image with almost a graphic feel, Rona. I am struck by the fact they all face the same way. If I were a member of this flock, I would definitely face the other way. And who the hell counts that accurately? :)

Thank you Ellen, Deb and Steve! Yes, I always wondered how they do the counts - they post them regularly during the migration season, almost every week or so. I was struck by the pattern, too. I have seen and shot terns in Florida who face the same direction as well - I think it's because they face the wind.

Into the wind makes sense. Good for take off...bad for peeing though. :)
