Description

Submitted for the PG101 Body Parts Contest. Last winter my grand-daughter and I read "A Lantern in Her Hand" by Bess Streeter Aldrich, the story of a pioneer woman (Abbie Deal) in the late 1800's and first half of the 20th century. It's loosely based on the life of Aldrich's mother. In the novel, Abbie's mother gives her a string of pearls in a skin-covered box, a wedding gift from her husband. Abbie keeps the necklace through years of incredible hardship and eventually gives it to her own grand-daughter for her wedding. After we'd finished the book, my grand-daughter and I visited the Aldrich home in Elmwood, Nebraska. This replica of the box and necklace were in a "Lantern" themed bedroom; when my grand-daughter recognized them, the docent invited her to pick them up. Category: Details and Macro

The story is, of course, lovely and engaging. I also love the open-ended quality of the image and the stories that "might" be true about it. The choice of elements and hand position is evocative of all those possibilities. #1786169

Super sweet image and story. You can tell by her hands just how grown-up your grandaughter is getting. Bittersweet, isn't it? #11990874
