Description

Walt Disney Concert Hall
Downtown Los Angeles
Originally, Frank Gehry, architect, of the Walt Disney Concert Hall designed the exterior with a façade of stone. After receiving much acclaim for his titanium building in Bilbao, however, he was urged to change the stone to stainless steel. For the residents of the neighboring condominiums suffered glare problems because of the sunlight reflecting off these surfaces. The heat in the nearby condominiums resulted in skyrocketing electric bills. Certain spots on the sidewalk were reported to be 140°F. The identifying panels were dulled by lightly sanding the panels to eliminate unwanted glare. This portion of the building was not sanded as much.
