This is for Dale's Challenge this month. I pass this barn all the time on my way to work. There are not a whole lot of these advertisements left. I do not smoke or chew and do not like what tobacco does to people but this is from an time when this was a profitable advertisement. #1524577

Oh Beth this really bring back memories when we went to clumberland lake every summer for several weeks, driving through kentucky you would see barns with this advertisement all through the country roads. I love it! #10658579

Stephen Shoff April 18, 2013

We even had those advertisements in California. #10658620

Dale Hardin April 18, 2013

Still see a lot of them in rural Idaho as well, and along just about any rural roads in America.

Have you tried lightening this up a bit,
Beth? #10658630

Jeff E Jensen April 19, 2013

I've really got to get after this challenge.

I agree that it could be brightened a bit. #10658927

Love the composition o f this, Beth. I do agree with Dale and Jeff to bring it up a bit! I like the details and definition in it, too! #10659007

Nice find! Great clarity in this shot. I agree this is on the dark side - in more ways than one. #10659399

Beth - I like your edit. And yes, I caught Mike's comment as well. I can't think of anything worse than chewing tobacco. Great for the monthly challenge, Beth, #10660374

This is really nice Beth. I do like the edit better-I can see a peek of green back there somewhere! We have these all over Ohio too, once you get south of 70. #10662368

Another barn and yes I have heard of the Mail Pouch Tobacco ones dotted around the country. "Chewing tobacco and spitting!" That has to be one of the
grossest, nastiest, disgusting habits that I can think of. Yuck!
It appears from a Google search that the these barns were all painted by a Mr Harley Warwick who is quoted as saying he painted around 20,000 until 1992 when he retired to making and painting bird-house at home.
I also found a webpage describing how a lady has a red barn on her property and just for fun, she and an artist friend painted a replica of these Mail Pouch barn ads. Now that's really preserving an icon! #10663144

Peter,
Thanks for all the information. I didn't know who painted all these. This one seems to have a really good paint job and as I have passed this barn every day on my way to work I never really paid much attention to it until the last year or so. I wonder how many other things we pass daily and don't think much about them? #10664053

Elaine Hessler April 23, 2013

Wow, that really is amazing Peter. I did not know that! #10664148
