Changing of the Guard, Windsor Castle

Stephen Shoff April 08, 2013

These images came from a visit to Windsor Castle last week. I'm looking for recommendations on how to show this set of pictures.

Since BP isn't very flexible for this kind of image, please use the link to get full-screen views of the collage, its component images, and a few others from the day.

By the way, here's a tidbit that I came across a few months ago...You can use the F11 key in hour browser to toggle all the menu bars. If you turn them off, you can get full screen views of the content of any page you are viewing. #1523033

Stephen, as far as showing the images to the club, just using the standard BP method in a thread would give us a better view than the pano view does.

Your full size views on the browser look great. #10646088

I like the details in these photos and the series to give us an idea of the order of the changing of the guard. I went to the link to view them.

I do agree with Dale that being able to see everything the photos have to offer is better in a full view. #10646136

these are great pictures Stephen immediately I thought of the Wizard of Oz! I think selecting your first one and then adding to the thread is the best way to show theses off. I must have been very cool to see this. I have never made it over the blue ocean yet....maybe someday. #10646272

They look great in full size on your slide show. Are you looking for how to show them in print or just on line here? I think the on line was answered but in print I think the would look good grouped in a large frame with a custom mat with cut outs for each individual photo. #10646288

Rita. I'm concerned that showing these one at a time masks the continuity. I'm looking for an effective way to present the story line. On screen will always limit the amount of detail visible in these images unless you have a really large monitor that has at least HD pixel dimensions (1290x1080). But it might be that the layout could be improved to fit better on a 4:3 or 19:6 aspect ratio screen.

As far as being able to see the detail, I'm increasingly feeling constrained by PB's format that prevents being able to see full-screen size views. At least one of the pictures I uploaded to my personal web-site loses all meaning and impact when reduced to about 1/3 of the available screen real-estate. #10646442

And here's a great nostalgia trip for this guy, Stephen! For thirty years of my life I lived just 15 miles from Windsor, Berks. so have seen the Queen's Guard on a number of occasions. And for those who are curious, the grey coats are their cold/wet weather gear known as 'greatcoats' and are worn over their bright scarlet uniforms that we usually see in touristy, travel photos.
Thank you for these images, I had almost forgotten this aspect of Her Majesties Foot guards.
Help me please as I am having a senior moment and because the BP images are protected from copying I am unable to cut and paste the URL. I guess I could just laboriously type it all into my browser but the chances of getting all those underlines, tildes, % characters right are wholly unlikely!
And it is doubly frustrating that our Ancient One Mr Dale seems able to achieve what I am not! #10646579

I like these images a lot and understand your frustration with showing these pictures on BP without the full screen option. I think we could all "see" these in a collage format by just looking at the individual components separately in a thread.

For the class on textures I am currently taking, I had to get a flickr account to share between members and after a couple of days I had used all my storage for the month so went to the flickrpro option which was reasonable for showing images in full resolution mode and no storage restrictions. Go to this link and see what I'm talking about. (Hope it works - let me know if it doesn't). If it opens up correctly, if you double click any image you can get a full screen view.

Stephen - I just now tried getting to one of my class images by using my link from this site and it worked, but just click on the image once, not twice. From that point it is almost full screen but if you go to the top right hand side of the interface it will give you the "Full screen" option and then it opens up to fill your entire monitor. Cool. Let me know if this doesn't work. #10646743

Peter, its the text of the URL that needs to be cut and pasted. I'm sure from the BP FAQs that I could have made the image itself clickable, but I wasn't at home to look up the HTML code to make that work. All you have to do is click at one end or the other of the URL, drag across the line until it is all highlighted, and then copy and paste.

Debbie, I view full-screen images on Flickr a lot. So I know how that works. It works very nicely. Your URL worked t, in the same fashion as my URL. I'm starting to toy with the idea of getting a Flickr account in order to share images on other bulletin boards. But there are a lot of photo hosting sites and I don't really want to start the task of evaluating them and chosing one.

However, I rather like the slide show and organizational capabilities that this JAlbum software builds, and very flexible modes for navigating and viewing. It also lets me make use of the personal website that my Comcast e-mail and internet subscription provides. This album of Windsor Castle pictures is not standalone -- it is part of a larger set of albums. I just haven't linked this most recent one into the main page yet. I know Dale tried it after our Lone Pine trip. He doesn't like it. He apparently prefers his blog format.

OK, everyone, I get it. This collage idea didn't work. Thank you for the feedback. Of course, I'm not out to share a series of vacation pics. I use my website for that. My goal was to see if I could tell a story. Trying out the effectiveness of new approaches is what the BP Phello's gallery is for.

Stephen, I'm glad you brought this up because we all want to share our visions with friends in a way that is convenient and easy to use. Taking the time to try out and share different avenues is very useful, since many don't have the time, or web savvy, to attempt that.

I have noticed that the images when displayed on Flickr do seem to have a higher resolution then on BP. Thank you for sharing your experience. #10647031

Elaine Hessler April 09, 2013

These are very nice images-my favorite is the last one-I like how the lone soldier is framed by the doorway and the rest of the building. I really like the way you have composed all of these images.

I don't have anything useful for you regarding framing, but I understand why you would want to keep these together.

I do have a Flickr account and used it as a portfolio before I joined BP. I still use it for my best pictures and have not had any problems with it. #10647151

Stephen. Mystery solved for why I couldn't cut and paste which I am familiar with and had already tried without success. This is not possible on the gallery images as everything on that webpage is protected including titles and descriptions. But, the url and everything else can be cut or copied off the webpage of responses to the image. I am kind of surprised that no-one else picked up on that.
I am in agreement with you all that BP does us no favors with its miserly allocation of space rather than allowing full screen images. #10647334

Stephen Shoff April 09, 2013

Thank you Elaine. Yes, the last picture is the real "keeper". The others are just an interesting way of leading into it.

Peter, glad you got it worked out. Guess I didn't quite understand the difficulty you were having either, but I'm glad you got there. And I'm happy you enjoyed the pictures. I've been thinking you are over here somewhere and we missed the opportunity to get together. #10647352

Wow, I'm way late to this. . .

I like the concept (and the images), I attempted something like this with images from Arlington, but never got very far with it. I may have to go back and try again. #10647523

Stephen, if it is a collage that you want to use for this display of images. have found using Picasa 3 ( which is a free download) the easiest ever to make a collage. you can move your picture around until you get them the way you want. Really fun to play around with. I am attaching a collage I made for someone. I will remove it in 24 hours. #10647586

Stephen Shoff April 10, 2013

That's a good idea, Rita. Thank you. I have both Elements and an old version of Picassa installed on my laptop. I may give PSE a try before I complicate my life with yet another software product. #10647807

Beth Spencer April 11, 2013

I am late on this, I am sorry. I like the pictures, You can do the collage in PSE fairly simple, Start with a blank layer and just put each one on its own layer and then move them where you want. Let us know what you decide. #10649770

Stephen Shoff April 13, 2013

Actually, Beth, that is exactly what I did in CS4 to create the original collage.

I did fire up the PSE collage tool and played with it some. #10651762
