I like your framing (and I love the arch coffers I can see) but I think the archway and the trees are just way, way too underexposed. (I'm assuming, based on exposing for the bright sky and included sun?) Is there enough detail in the shadows, to pull some up? I'd kind of like to see the sunlit stone be brighter, and then the dark, shaded stone to be about the brightness of the (current) sunlit stone. If that makes sense? #1499019

No. 3 is better still--I was on the fence about that prism. However, in looking at all 3 again, I now think the overall shot is itself, underexposed for the stone... ie, even the now-brightened stone on the left side, doesn't feel/look right to me, for reflected lighting in sun-still-above-the horizon kind of light... it has the "dim" look of underexposed reflected light, if that makes sense? I feel like the whole scene needs to be exposed brighter (which would certainly blow out a bit more sun/sky, of course) to capture the arch properly lit in both the brights and the shadows... so perhaps I want this to be an HDR subject instead! ;) #10425960

Aimee - I agree, I prefer it gone.

Chris - I can see what you are saying and I think you are right, it would be better with more detail. Unfortunately, this image started out most of 2 stops under exposed so I've pulled out of it what I can. I did try making 3 versions and then combining into an HDR image, but it wasn't good so I'm leaving it here. That being said, I do like this image with the final edits and we'll see how the judges feel about it.

Jeff - I like your last edit and so understand about just bringing out what you could when taking a severely underexposed shot. But we have to try, right? The group must be thinking about sunstars because I have one I took on the way up to the top of Pikes Peak yesterday. You may or may not see it, depending on how underexposed it is.

I like your last one, too. It does have an entirely different feel to it! I look forward to Peter's FYI. #10429257

Ha Jeff! I always thought Valley Forge was a Revolutionary war battle but now I know differently. Google websites gives me the full history of it being just an 'over-wintering encampment' but about 2500 under George Washington died from starvation, and diseases.
I often think these commemerative sites both here and in Europe are too prettied up and this is why generations following these wars have little idea of the obsceneity of the realities and are ready to repeat them. #10429353
