The Old Mill at Vernon - Normandie, France
Uploaded: December 12, 2010 07:10:43
Several mills like this one used to be operating on the Seine river all along the old wooden bridge. This bridge itself was built in the XIIth century, the mill is probably of the XVIth century. The old bridge has been destroyed and rebuilt several times in the middle age. It was very unsafe and was definitively destroyed in the beginning of the XIXth century. Then it was replaced by a stone bridge in 1861. Destroyed during the war in 1870 it was rebuilt in 1872 and then bombed in 1940. The mill was suspended and able to move up and down depending on the level of the river water.

Marvelous composition, JP! I love your framing with the sailboats through the bridge and the more modern buildings across the river. And I especially love the birds on the roof of the old mill! Great lighting, fabulous sky. And thanks so much for the history - very fascinating. #9095371Dick W. Wyatt December 13, 2010
