New Categories If I enter the contest and for example, Birds(Animals), can I only win the category if I enter a photo of a bird but cannot win if I enter another kind of animal?

Under the new guidelines, effective April 1, the answer is yes. In April, you must enter a bird in the Animals category and cannot win with any other kind of animal. The sub-categories, which are listed first in the drop-down, will change each month.

Where can we see those new guidelines, Nikki? Can you share a link or something?

This is the text of the mass e-mail Jim sent out March 28 - and I know some don't get it, so here it is in its entirety. "In a few days, I will be changing up the contest at BetterPhoto! In a recent email, I asked for category suggestions. I got TONS of replies. Thank you so much! So many, in fact... here's what we are going to do: Each month, every single category will be a new twist on an old theme. Instead of just one "monthly theme", they will ALL be themed. Animals might be "Birds" and the People category might become, for the month of April, "Street Photography". Elements of Design will be focus on specific subjects like "Abstracts". The "Digital Darkroom" category will be expanded to include in-camera techniques such as "long exposure" or "intentional blur". Often the entire category will be devoted to "Black and White". Travel/Place might be "Small Towns" one month and a specific popular destination the next month. The previous Flowers category will be totally transformed and will now be Still Life and Concepts subjects such as "Still Life: Bouquets", Historical Rooms, Writing/Books, Liberty, Joy, etc. Details and Macro will now include flowers as well as many other specific (small) subjects like "Flower Petals". Man-made will have a new specific category each month such as "Architecture". The previous Monthly Theme category will to totally transformed. It will now sometimes be a "Catch-All" category, and at other times it may be devoted to "New Winners" only (people who haven't won 1st, 2nd or Grand yet), or be focused on a particular kind of camera such as a "Smartphone Camera".
If you haven't already, now might be your time to enter the contest and join the fun. Thanks, P.S. These new categories for April will be posted soon (and hint, hint... you might discern them in the above text!). Stay tuned and have fun! That was the e-mail. Then on April 1 Jim sent a fun little April Fool's message with crazy categories (like past presidents for People), but he ended that message with a PS to tell us it was a joke and to give a link to the "real, new" categories. And that day, the categories did change. If you go to the Contest tab, you will now see the new ones. And when you enter the contest, whether through a new upload or from your gallery, you will see the new categories. Jim wisely (IMO) put the month's sub-category or theme FIRST with the over-arching category in parentheses. Yes, I am still seeing the occasional photo of coyotes or squirrels or burros, but for the most part, members seem to have figured it out. Hope this helps.

Thanks, Nikki. I was hoping it was just a guideline, not a strict rule but there it is.
