blurry macro pics I am a real newbie. So this might just sound stupid, but I have spent the past evening trying to use my macro zoom lens. 70-300mm. I am trying to zoom in on a small christmas ornament I have set up on a table. I just wanted to try out the macro zoom lens. And how far from the object I am zooming in on do I have to be? I keep moving back but the ornament never seems to get in focus. I am also using a canon eos digital rebel camera. I have tried it using all the settings I can see on my camera and still no go. Hope this does not sound silly. I am just really frustrated. Michelle

Hi Michelle, I dont believe your lens is a macro lens perse, but a telephoto you are using as a macro. No problem though, switch the lens to manual focus and then move the camera/lens closer or farther back to get the ornament in focus. You can use auto-focus to get you in the ballpark - then switch to manual focus. You may have to move back farther than you want but you can do a crop after to get the framing you want. True macro lenses have different shaped spherical optics that give you 1:1 ratio. When shooting macro - I almost always use manual focus. Hope this helps - Happy New Year

Well darn, I was hoping to be able to do some macro shots with this lens. I bought it with that hope in mind. What would you recommend for a good macro lens for a Canon EOS digital Rebel? Not sure what good this lens is for then. Michelle

I have just been doing some research. Are close up lenses a good inexpensive substitue for a true macro lens? They are much cheaper. What is the quality of the pictures comparted to a macro lens? Michelle

Michelle, Like I said previously, I have a 100mm Canon macro lens (about $500) and is a true 1:1 lens that is designed for macro.

Michelle, which 70-300 do you have? Sigma and Tamron 70-300 f/4-5.6 Macro zooms have a normal focus range down to about 5 feet, and at their macro setting (may be manual focus only) can focus in the range of about 3 feet to 5 feet.

with the macro setting my 70-300 will have a 1:2 ratio and will focus at just over 3 ft. I have a set of those close-up filters you mentioned.although they are a bit soft around the edges, they do give decent results.the plane of focus is very narrow and I run into the problem of camera stability much more than focus. but for 40 bucks I don't regret the purchase.sam
