group photos While photographing groups of people, how do you get them in proportion? I took some family shots and the people in back looked like pinheads compared to front row.

What lens were you using, camera, and where were you standing and what, if anything were you standing on, and where were you positioned in relation to the group? M.

I just got a Canon digital Rebel. I was standing quite close, I do have a telephoto lens would that be better and stand back, or a tripod? Thanks

Wellllllllllll, it could be the telephoto. Most large group shots are done with "normal" focal length lenses, say 50-55mm variety or medium wide angles like a 35mm when you're using 35mm format. One solution if you haven't got one of these is to back off from your subject and just look in your viewfinder to see whether there's any distortion going on in the background. Placing taller people in the back and shorter ones in the front rows helps as well. No tripod is necessary unless you're working at a really slow shutter speed. On the other hand, a lot of families, including mine, are loaded with pinheads, boneheads, and paleolithic cretins. They seem to show up at family reunions. You sometimes have to shootem as you see em. Knowhatimeanhuh Corolee?

No it wasn't me. Now I am wondering though if it could possibly have been the subjects! I did view your photos, they were great!
