Hi MaRisha, Thanks for your interest in BetterPhoto's online courses! Some of the more advanced courses do require an SLR - a camera (digital or film) that offers full creative controls and allows for interchangeable lenses. HOWEVER, the majority of BetterPhoto courses simply require a camera that's above the basic point and shoot: i.e., a compact camera that has at least some manual override (i.e., Aperture Priority and/or manual exposure mode) and a zoom lens. Also, each BetterPhoto course lists the equipment required for the course: on the course description page and also in the Course Q&A (look for the Q&A and the Course Outline at the bottom of the course description page). And, if you would like some help in choosing a camera, be sure to check out our new Digital Camera Calculators at: Hope this helps, MaRisha! Best regards,

And, if I may add....I took a class last year but wasn't sure if the equipment I had would qualify. I emailed the instructor before I signed up for the class saying what I would be using and asked if it would work. In my case, it did. So you might check with the instructor of whatever class you are thinking about.....:-) Bob
