What lenses work with Canon Digital 10D Hi I have read that if you purchase a Canon 10D you should use only the Canon lens ... I am new to SLR's and not too sure if a Sigma or other brand lens will work just as well as the Canon lens ... Any advice would be very helpful, I am looking into a wide angel lens and Sigma sells for about $500 Where Canon can be up to 1,300 ... Also if anyone knows if Sigma has the SI option the Canon lens have ...

Hi Lisa, I also have a Canon 10D, and I use sigma lens. I find them very good, have had excellent results with them.

You can use third party (Sigma, Tamron, Tokina, ...) lenses with the 10D, so long as they are made for the EOS lens mount. There can be some problems, however. The communication between the camera and lens is entirely electronic. The third party makers do not license the mount design from Canon, so they do not know the exact programming for this communication. They backward engineer it and test to make sure their lenses work with the existing models. The problem comes when Canon (or Minolta, Nikon, ...) introduce a new model with new or upgraded features. The third party lenses that worked with the older model cameras may not work with the new generation. Typical symptoms of incompatible electronics in the lens are the mirror locking up, flashing battery symbol, and "Err 99" on the digital bodies. It has been a particular problem with some (not all) of Sigma's lenses for the Canon mount when the EOS 3, Elan 7, 10D and Digital Rebel were introduced. Sigma has a program to upgrade the electronics in its current lenses at no charge. See http://www.sigma-photo.com/html/pages/faqsb.htm#22.

Take a good look at the Tamron DI 17-35 F2.8-f4. Excellent lens. Not to knock Sigma, but they seem to have a quality issue. People get good lenses and bad, sometimes sending them back a few times before they get a good copy. David
