Where is the best place to get a press pass? Hi all. where would be the best place for me to get my freelance press pass? I really want to become a freelance photographer, but am unsure where to go.

Go to indymedia.org and find an independent media organization in your area. Offer to shoot events for them, or send them a JPEG or two of something timely and newsworthy you might have shot. They can make you a press pass. Their interest is in parts of our society who do not get mainstream coverage: the elderly, the poor, alternative lifestyles, various protest movements, etc. You won't be paid for your work, but you do get the by-lines and your work is copyrighted, if you choose.

Erin: In general there's no such thing as a press pass. Press photographers have Media credentials that prove their occupation. When they show these, an event organizer lets them in to shoot the event, game, press conference, etc. Sure, there are companies that market so called press passes - not sure who does now. Try a search for photographer press pass at www.google.com That pass won't get you in to any major events but it might get you into small events. Cheers! Peter Burian

You need to shoot for somebody. There aren't any id's or passes that signify you as a free lancer. If there were you might as well make one on your own.

Gregory: Well there are such "passes" that you can buy but making your own is just as good for all the value that a "pass" really has. Whether they buy it or make it, it's really a forgery if the user is not really a press photographer shooting for some publication. Peter Burian

And if you're not shooting for somebody, buying a press pass dosen't really signify you as something more than a guy with a camera who decides to declare "I'm a freelancer now".
