how to photograph self

This may be a stupid question, but I'm not sure how to begin to do self photography. I'm always befind the camera, now I want to be in front of it and still maintain control of the camera.
My biggest concern is focusing and do you you use a self timer or an exposure cable? please help me get started. thanks

I find self portraits to be the most challenging. How you do them is as much about who you are as is the portrait itself. You could use a mirror, a remote release, or a timer. It's really up to you. If you have autofocus you could let the camera focus or if you have manual focus you can just pre-focus at the distance you will be. I would use an aperture like f8 to give yourself enough DOF to play with.
