Photography Question

memory card counter

weird question....I am using a CF card in my new Nikon D700. I reformat it in the camera every time I use it, but the counter keeps starting at the last photo. It is recording photo DSC_758 or something like that. How can I get it to start over at DSC_001 each time? I've checked the manual but cannot find anything about this.

Don't know many particulars about Nikons, but scroll through the menu and look for anything that has to do with file numbering. Switch it from continuous to the opposite of continuous.

  Hi Tara,
I actually prefer the continuous counter for my camera images as this gives me an idea of how many images I have taken overall but I use Adobe Photo Downloader to transfer my images from the CF card to my hard drives and this allows me to rename & number the images to my liking. So for Northwest String Summit 2009 my images will be named/numbered as NWSS09_001.CR2
This method works for my brain and I can usually remember & find an image quickly this way...
If you are not a Photoshop user you can use Irfanview (free download) or the default windows downloader gives you the same options if I remember correctly (I use MAC).
Hope this helps,
Carlton

I agree with Carlton...in that progressive numbering allows for quicker access to archived original files.

In my storage system, the file number preceeds the image title when I file an original.
(On processed/re-sized TIFF's and JPEG's, it's the other way around.)

With this system I can scroll through my processed images, which are listed alphabetically, find the file number after the name...then simply pull up that number to access the original.

Since I mostly take photos of people (clients) and they proof them online, I prefer for them to see 1.2.3, etc... not 758, 759....that just seems excessive. I also archive them under everyone's name and date so I can easily find what I need (archived twice: one untouched, original file, and one that I work with).
But Carlton, I do use photoshop and adobe dowloader. I will try renaming my files next time. I forgot about that feature, thanks for the tip.

See p. 300 of the D700's manual. In the Custom Setting Menu, under d: Shooting/Display is setting d6: File Number Sequence. Set it to 'off' and file numbering starts at 0001 with each folder. (see p. 272 for naming and selecting folders).

The size of the closet that allows Jon Close to keep every camera manual ever made would make every woman in the world jealous.

LOL! thanks, Gregory! But you couldn't keep many shoes in the space my disk drive takes up. I does seem I read camera manuals the way others go through romance novels. ;)
