Photography Question

Sarina Cook

Where to find workshops in our area

Can anyone tell me how to find workshops or seminars on portrait or wedding photography in Pennsylvania, New Jersey or New York? My son is in charge of finding information for his job and they would send him to these. A google search is not coming up with anything much. Thanks for any help you can offer. Unfortuantely, online courses are not accepted as they may send more than one photographer.

  Hi Sarina,
Workshops are hit & miss as far as choice of subjects, availability and are also usually too short to gain much in depth knowledge. This is why I prefer online classes.
Several BP intructors also do workshops and I get updates & newsletters from Jim Zuckerman, Tony Sweet, Brenda Tharp & Lewis Kemper to keep me updated with when/where they are scheduled for their workshops.
I did find a link that may be of help - http://art-support.com/workshops.htm#WA

Hope this helps,
Carlton

Thank you so much for this information.
Since his job is looking to send their photographers, I don't think they want to do online classes, but I'm going to suggest it to him anyway. I believe it would be cheaper for them too. Just quickly looking at the link I saw two workshops that may help him. But he can look into it more. I just thought I'd help him get started. Again, thanks for taking the time to help.

Search Camera Clubs and Pennsylvania. There are many and their web sites cna be a good source of everything related to photography.

The NJ Federation of Camera Clubs had over 30 clubs participating in its activities. The subject matter of each clubs monthly meetings is posted on its web site. www.njfcc.org

Shutterbug Magazine has a section devoted to courses and seminars schedule over several months. Some of these seem "interesting."

Check out the schedule for The Nikon School, a traveling photo show held around the country. When I went years ago, it really wasn't an advertisement for Nikon equipment. Today, it reflects digital exclusively.

Now, here's the rib. Carlton is quite correct - workshops and seminars are hit-or-miss. There are many, many people, billing themselves as pros, that conduct seminars. Remember, everyone isn't an expert [unless s/he is more than 50 miles from home.]

(unless he's more than 50 mi from home...:D ..)
I'm looking into njfcc now for my camera club speakers and I'm hoping to find something there also. I will look into the others also. I appreciate your input.

  Sarina,
I don't know exactly where you are in PA, but the Professional Photographers Assoc. Of PA sometimes has seminars at reasonable cost. They tend to be more portrait and wedding oriented. Camera clubs are a good source of info, the Berks and Harrisburg clubs sometimes have real good speakers and seminars. I'd do a search for camera clubs in the specific regions your son can access readily. Also, if he gets involved with a local club, he will hear about workshops through the club. Checking through photo magazines or their accompanying web sites can lead him to seminars as well.
Good Luck
