Photography Question

55-200mm Lens

I was looking at getting a Nikkor 55-200mm lense. Is this a good lens for shooting weddings or portraits? If anyone has an advice on this lens I would greatly appreciate it.

Thank you.

Hi Erika! This is the lens I use 80% of the time, and I'm very happy with it. I however, am not a people/wedding shooter.

Thank you. What type of things do you photograph? I'm sure that if you use it 80% of the time then I will probably use it almost 100% of the time.

Whatever catches my eye, a little of this and that. You can also do a search on the lens for reviews...

  Hi Erika,

I really like this lens, too. It's quite sharp. I don't shoot people/weddings, either, though. I think it would work fine for portraits, but if you want to get a big group of people in a shot (like the wedding party), you might need a wider focal length than 55mm.

What is your budget? If you can afford it, you might want to get the 18-200mm VR. That would give you LOTS of versatility, but of course, it is much more expensive.

Another thing you can do is search here on the site for wedding photos, then look to see what lenses people are using for them.

Thank you. Right now I cannot afford an 18-200mm VR but I might be able to borrow one for now. Thank you very much for the advice on when lens to use. I really appreciate it. I think I might look at investing in both lenses in the future.

hi, I just did a few weddings with this lens through the summer and I have found it to be a good lens, the biggest problem is when you have to photograph groups becuase the lens doesnt pull out as far I I wished.

So I went out and got an 18-55mm VR lens. This lens helps me pull really far back, which I love. and the 55-200 can zoom in. SO it has worked out.

But if you want to spend a little more go with the 18-200mm VR. it is a great lens. Or you could jus do what I did.
