How to transfer raw photos to an external hard dri I need serious help. I bought an external hard drive and I can't seem to get to copy my raw photos to the external drive. It seems when I copy, Iphoto automatically converts my raw photos to jpeg. I tried exporting which worked but then I don't get the IPhoto library which has all my events (folders) I wanted to take Richard Lynch's class but its full. Now I can't transfer any new pics from my camera because the computer says I don't have enough space. I don't want to erase anything until I figure this out, HELP!!!!

Wendy, I can't speak directly about iPhoto as I do not use it. Copying anything to a HD should not be a problem. It sounds like iPhoto is your culprit.
Once that is complete, it is then I use my post processing software to import for use. all the best, Pete

Judging from what I read about iPhoto, it does convert Raw files to jpg files, even when using Export command. One of the easiest way to transfer your Raw files from CF to your external drive is to use a CF card reader.

Unfortunately, I am also not familiar with iphoto; however, many image editing programs permit you to upload images to more than one place during the transfer process. For example, in PS CS3 you can specify that a copy of the RAW file by placed on an external while the program uploads to the internal drive. I do this every time so I will always have at least one backup of each file. Check and see if iphoto has this same capability.

Thank you for responding. I figured it out. Now I'm doing what I should have been doing all along- backing my photos on a hard drive and DVD.
