teleconverter issue

I bought a Sigma 2x DG teleconverter. I have a Sigma 70-300mm F4-5.6 macro super II lens. I can't get the teleconverter to attach to the lens. Is it because I bought this camera a few years ago when I bought my Nikon N80 film camera and it is maybe an older model or do I need some sort of adapter to attach it to the lens?

Kathleen, I assume that your Sigma lens has a Nikon mount. Does your Sigma teleconverter also have a Nikon mount? You can check to see if the teleconverter attaches to the CAMERA... if so, it is a Nikon-mount model. If not, take it back to where you bought it and exchange it for one with a Nikon mount.

Realize that your 70-300/4-5.6 lens will turn into a 140-600/8-11 lens with the teleconverter attached. Doubling your focal length eats two f-stops. There's no such thing as a free lunch.

I have, and prefer, the 1.4x teleconverter (Sigma). I only lose one f-stop with it, turning my 70-200/2.8 into a 98-280/4 lens (which is close to a 100-300/4 for way less cost). Also, the 1.4x teleconverter is sharper.

Good luck!

Thank John. Yes it attaches to the camera, it has a nikon mount but I cannot attach my lens to it. I was wondering if I have an older model lens. I bought it when I bought my Nikon N80 two or three years ago. I really can't understand why it won't attach.

The Sigma teleconverters are specialized accessories intended for use with a select few high-end lenses. They are designed with an extended front element that nests into the rear of the compatible lenses, but will conflict with the rear element of other lenses. The Sigma teleconverter should have come with an instruction sheet/chart listing the compatible lenses, or see http://www.sigma-photo.com/lenses/lenses_tele.php.

I don't know if Nikon's own teleconverters will work with your Sigma 70-300 f/4-5.6, but those made by Kenko and Tamron will. A 2x is not going to give very good results. You'll end up with a combination that is 140-600 f/8-11 which is not going to AF well (if at all) due to the small effective aperture, and manual focus will be difficult due to the dim viewfinder. A 1.4x teleconverter would be a better choice with this lens.

Thanks Jon. I am going to return this teleconverter. I got it at B&H so that shouldn't be a problem. I know that the lens I have was discontinued by Nikon so I will go to my local camera store and inquire about at 1.4x teleconverter that will fit this lens. Thanks again.
