Photography Question

topcon lens mount adapter

I have a good condition Topcon TRC50X retinal camera which also does FAG. I have all the orignal relay lenses for MT-1 camera, polaroid and 2 TV relay lenses for video camera (a complete one for Sony DXC 750MT). I am a doctor so not very good with technical detalis. Can anybody give me complete solution to upgrade it to digital? I have a Canon Rebel XT but I could also use a Nikon D200.

Thanks

try that article. There isn't an easy way. I'm currently working on an older KOWA retinal camera.

good luck

Excellent article. I depicts the pi position and the solution for syncronisation.

Thanks a lot

There are a decent number of other articles on that site as well.

I've wondered about replacing the strobe flash built into the camera with a more traditional flash for a digital slr camera. This would perhaps ease the sync issues, but would require the right size to fit in the slot. I'm looking in to it because the replacement flash bulbs for my Kowa are $420 and its an ancient system waiting to blow a part or two. This also creates a number of other problems, one being the mirror that flaps between the eyepiece and camera slot, if that makes sense. My solution may be to just keep it permanently in the position of the camera slot, and use the eyepiece of the digital camera. In the end, I may just end up using the optics of the Kowa, and the digital camera will control the rest.

just some ideas, I'm still fiddling, but I've been impressed with my results. I need to dilate a friend tonight and do some actual "eye work" to really test it out.

keep me informed. there are plenty of ways to do it, some better than others.

At this moment I am trying to buy a TL-110 (hopefully a second hand piece) adapter that will directly adapt a Nikon D200, D2x or D2h. The rest should be very easy with the information in that paper. If you have any information about where I can find a TL110 TV Relay I would appreciate very much

You can check ebay, or a lot of the used ophthalmic equipment places around. They sometimes like to charge a huge amount of money for these rare pieces.

Does that do away with the 1.5x crop factor? Does it hook up electronically as well?

From what I've read, there is very little difference between the D200 and the D80, other than the 10pin plug (which you may need)and perhaps a few settings. I doubt you'd ever tell a difference between the D80, D200 and the D2x or D2h as far as quality goes. The newer models seem to have more advanced image processing which improves the detail quite a bit over the older models like the D1x, D100, etc.

It does hook electronically very easy but I have no ideea about the 1.5 crop factor (the company recomands this combination). Once I have the relay lens I will try different cameras. D2x and D2h are recomanded by the manufacturer and the say D200 has not been tested by TOPCON for FAG. The D2 series have all good quality but I am not sure if synchronisation is the same.

  Donald Z,

I'm just beginning to hook up to a Kowa RC-XV2. How did you do the physical hook up?

I'm working n the electronic flash right now too.

Thanks,
Chris

  Donald,

Would you know the flange to film distance of the film camera back of the Kowa? Where can I get this info if ever?

Thanks,

David

Chris: I did the physical hookup by taking the mounting ring out of the old polaroid camera back. If you don't have one, you'd probably need to get a mount of whatever you camera you have (the easy part) and search for something that is compatible with the kowa mount. The kowa mount is much bigger than the nikon mount I had, but there may be something like it in a box at an old camera shop. Best to go search around there, or find something similar (diameter-wise) on ebay perhaps.

David: Don't know the flange distance. I've only seen a picture of the 35mm camer back of the kowa. It actually had a lens inside the mount. Not sure if there was any power in the lens, or if it just acted as a dust cover for the film. I tried to email and get info from kowa but they only sent me the manual, which wasn't much help. But honestly, they didn't even need to do that, so kudos to them...

I'm almost at the point where I'd rather splurge and get a canon 5D just to avoid the image size issues and cropping. Nikon just announced a D3 full frame camera, but not due out till november.

Keep me informed.
