CF Card Error???

I'm freaking out right now!!! I shot a tournament today and near the end of it an error message popped up on my display. I did all the normal stuff - removing the battery; removing the CF card; restarting the camera, etc. When I turned it back on the number in the upper right hand screen that normally shows how many pictures I have left on the card was blank. No numbers at all. I couldn't take any more pictures either. I know I had room for about 190 more pictures, so the card wasn't full.

When I got home I plugged my Card Reader into my laptop to see if my pics were on the card. My laptop's not registering that the Card Reader is plugged in, which leads me to believe something is wrong with the card.

Can anyone help??? I'm going to worry about this until I can get to a camera shop (which won't be until Monday). Is it possible for the card to be erased while I'm just shooting?

Thanks in advance for any help!

-Alicia

P.S. I have a Canon 20D, and the card is a Hitachi 4GB

There is good and bad news. The card most likely did not get erased. However, the data most likely did get corrupted. If the card is actually a micro-drive rather than a CF card, the photos can probably be recovered. It is easy to damage a micro-drive, as they can't handle the abuse that a CF card can. Since you mention that the card was a Hitachi 4GB my guess is that it is a micro-drive.

I hope this helps.

Thanks for the help. That makes me feel a little better. What do I need to do to try to retrieve the data?
