Wisdom-Outdoor Shoots and Weather

I need your advice! I'm just starting out and have been doing outdoor shoots. They are driving me crazy! How do you plan with clients and the weather? Any tips?? Do you just call them last minute if the weather looks like it will hold out? Or is there a better plan of action. I'm in Seattle BTW so rain is always looming around here. I did a shoot yesterday and it was overcast and so dreary. Everyone says that overcast days are the best to shoot on, but to be honest I hate that kind of light. You get awful shadows under the eyes unless you use fill flash. I much prefer open shade on a sunny day or dappled light on the edge of a forest etc...Am I crazy?? Or do I just not know how to shoot on overcast days. Well I ramble. Any help anyone can give would be VERY much apreciated!

Hi Michelle;

Personally, I've done my best natural light portraits on clear days in early morning and late evening. Afternoon sun seems a little to harsh for me.

As for weather, communicate with your clients. Cell phone-great tool for this. Tell the client your concerns, but leave the decision up to them. If they decide to do the shoot in the rain, make sure you're prepared, You may have to shoot it with the camera inside a ziplock bag, but it's their decision.

Again, communicate. there should be no last minute decisions.

Have fun and keep shooting,
Mark H.
