FILL LIGHT:Hand held flash and slaves

I want to shoot portraits with fine grain films (IlfordPanF Plus 50) in outdoor available sunlight. I want to experiment using a hand held flash as a fill light. What do I need to do this? Do I need a slave? Can I mount the flash on a tripod - if so, how?
If this is possible, what light source do I read - the constant light, or the flash? I do not have a hand held light meter.

I think it's great that you want to experiment with fill flash. For what you are talking about though I would recommend reflectors. They are easier to handle and what you see is what you get. I only use flash to "knock down" background light. IOW to balance with the background ambient light.

That being said, I can give you some tips. You only need a slave if 1. you are using more than one light or B. the flash you are using is too far away to use a PC cord. You can mount the flash on a tripod via a slave, or another hotshoe adapter. If you want to get serious you can get a Multiclamp from Photoflex that will mount to a tripod or lightstand, hold your flash, and has a mount for an umbrella. You need to read (or at least know) each light source. If it's just for fill the flash should be about a stop less than the main (sun) light. Of course this is not a hard and fast law but it is a starting point.

Thanks Jeff for responding to my question. I did use my reflector - the only problem was finding an assistant to hold it! I'll definitely look into the Multiclamp from Photoflex as you suggested and thanks for giving me a better understanding on reading my light sources. By the way, could you recommend a simple light meter to start out with?
