Lens I am thinking about buying a Canon EF-S 17-85mm f4-5.6 IS USM Lens. Can anyone tell me what quality this lens is and has anyone had any experience with it. I will be using it on my digital Rebel. Equiv. (28-135) I believe "L" is their best lens, how does this compare?

The EF-S 17-85mm IS USM lens for the digital camera is very similar with the EF 28-135mm IS USM, which is a very good all around lens. You can't go wrong with this lens.

Thanks Andy for your response: Do you have a preference between the two lenses you mentioned? The 17-85 will give me wider angle than 28-135. Which would you choose? I cannot afford both at this time.

Richard, I had a similar discussion question: http://www.betterphoto.com/forms/qnaDetail.php?threadID=18931 I got the EFS 17-85mm IS version, which, in my opinion, is much better than the kit lens the camera came with. I find I do 95% of my shooting in this range. For you, you should decide if you like wide angles more than zooms. If so, then go with the 17-85. If not, then go with 28-135.

I would go for the 17-85 for the 20D. I have the 28-135 because I am still using film ;)

Richard, I have the 17-85. It is a good lens. I like the wider angle it provides compared to the 28-135. Which you choose, depends on what else you have. It is nice to have the ability to use any focal length at any time. I also have the 75-300, which I am not fully happy with. I plan to upgrade to the 70-200mm f/4 L lens. But, I will have from 17-200mm covered.
