When I first saw the title to this thread, I though I could help but what I had in mind was a Bunn coffee pot and a big cup! Janis, lighting equipment is like cameras. There really is no "right" equipment, only choices. Perhaps you can be a little more specific about what you are wanting (hot lights, strobes, etc.) and Debby or someelse skilled in studio work can point you in the right direction.

thanks for your suggestions but I really dont know what any of those are used for. please help direct me. it might help you to understand that i'm only 13. if you were to shoot professional photos of children, what would you use for a good lighting system? also, if shooting sports, how much would you sell photos to the parents for? thanks for all your help so far.

Sounds typical. Everyone wants a copy - until they discover it will cost them something. Janis, the thread Debby mentioned is long but it is full of info. Read it and it will tell you a lot. Debby is correct about pricing. Just start with a low price but make sure you cover your costs and make a little profit. As time passes and you get even better, more people will approach you about shooting something THEY want specifically. Then you can start raising your prices.
