Digital Darkroom: Layer Masks When working with layer masks to color correct the foreground and the background separately, I am having trouble with the edges. I use feathering, and have experimented with anywhere from 1-5 pixel feathering, but I still have trouble keeping the edges from being too evident. Anyone have some tips on how to deal with this.

I use MS Digital Image Pro, and in addition to feathering, it has an option for anti-aliasing the mask. I don't know if PhotoShop has this option, but it probably does. Anyway, I've noticed that if I'm trying to separate an object from the background, it works better to turn anti-aliasing off. Otherwise, the edge of the mask will have the background color blended in with the mask color.

Yes, it does have an option to turn off anti-alias. I will try that--thank you.

I think your problem is too small a feather. 5 pixel is a pretty sharp line across a 1000 pixel image. If you will hold the alt key and click on your mask to bring it up, I think you will see what I mean. Once you alt-click on the mask, you can use a brush or apply a gossen blur to adjust your feather. Vince
