Photography Question

lighting

Hello all!!! I am starting to explore a little more with lighting, and I have a few questions.
1. What books on portrait(Bridal) lighting would anyone suggest?
2. How type of light would anyone suggest as a back drop light? I did a little practice with lighting this past weekend and I using a flash strobe on its lowest setting to light my back drop, but it still blew it out.

I'm looking to just obtain more background to subject seperation, and also glow around the subject. HELP!!!

There are severak types of light 'modifiers' that you can place on your strobe to create the glow effect. They could include a grid, barndoors or an actual background reflector. These are available from your light manufacturer. You can also shape your light by using foil wrapped around your strobe reflector to shape the light output. If your exposure is blown out even at the lowest setting, you next need to adjust your f/stop down to a smaller aperature to get the correct exposure.
