Bio

My first camera was given to me in 1956 as a gift. It was a Russian made camera that, I believe, is still made in China under "Seagull" name. As a teenager I learned film development and darkroom skills.

In 1999 in preparation for camping safary in Zimbabwe I bought John Shaw's book "Landscape Photography". That book was an eye opener, but it was Bryan Peterson's "Understanding Exposure" and "Learning to See Creatively" that really put me on the right track.

I beleive in shooting what I understand the best. This is why nature is my favorite subject with bicycle racing being close second. I do not use Photoshop much, except for minor cropping and tweaking. I'd rather be outside shooting than sitting at the computer.

Before digital I shot mostly slide film with Pentax ME Super and Nikon N80 bodies, various Tamron and Nikkor lenses. Some images on this site were scanned from slides shot with those terrific cameras. When digital camera race finally slowed down, Nikon D70s (recently replaced with D300) and Nikkor 18-200 became the most often used gear. My other lenses are Nikkor 80-200mm F/2.8 and 50mm F/1.4. ND filters are Cokin. Good tripod and a simple monopod are my only other tools.

For underwater images I use full featured compacts Canon Powershot A80 and Canon Powershot 710 IS in UW housing .

Many thanks to Ken Rockwell (www.kenrockwell.com) for his "sober" look into the world of photography. His phrase "camera does not matter" is my favorite.

Thank you for reading
