It’s humbling to be in the presence of so much talent and passion here at BP. I confess to being both amazed by, and a bit jealous of, such dedication to the art of photography. It’s odd, because while I feel right at home amongst people with whom I share an interest, I also feel quite out of place sometimes. And more than a little like a fraud…
Like Frankie the Frog, I’m something of a slacker. I own a tripod, but (almost) never use it. Photoshop Elements is on my home computer (originally, PSE5…now it’s PSE7), but my post processing seldom consists of more than cropping, adjusting levels, tweaking the sharpness, correcting hue, and doing a quick pass with the median and/or Gaussian blur filter. I carry nothing ‘in the field’ except a camera, a cleaning cloth, and a bag of walnuts (for the squirrels). That’s not true. I (inadvertently) carry a Leatherman Micra tool, which I’ve actually used two or three times (to snip an offensive leaf that a frog was taking shelter behind).
On a good week, I shoot for a couple hours Saturday morning, and sometimes Sunday. In the summer, I might get an hour of shooting on Friday afternoon. I hand-hold (obviously!) even for macro work, use AF 99.4% of the time (or thereabouts), have in my arsenal nothing more advanced than the UV filters that stay on the front of my lenses, and have never taken a single image in B&W (or shot with the intent of converting to B&W).
Truth be told, if writing and drawing didn’t exacerbate my perfectionist tendencies, I doubt I would ever have done more with photography than take the occasional vacation snapshot. Taking pictures became my creative outlet when I learned that I could enjoy the process even if the results were unsatisfactory to me. Besides, I love critters, color, and being outdoors.
