"Above all, it's hard learning to live with vivid mental images of scenes I cared for and failed to photograph. It is the edgy existence within me of these unmade images that is the only assurance that the best photographs are yet to be made."
-Sam Abell

Bio

Nancy is a self-taught amateur wildlife and nature photographer. Her love of exploration and new experience has taken her sloshing through the Florida Everglades, climbing the Mayan temples of Belize and Guatemala, horse-trekking through the Canadian Rockies, meandering along the one-lane country roads of England, and going for game drives on a photographic safari through Kenya.

Before going digital, Nancy used macro to telephoto lenses on good ol' manual Nikon FE and FA camera bodies. Her first foray into the digital world was with a Nikon Coolpix 3100; she has since upgraded to the entry-level DSLR Nikon D40x with an AF-S 18-135 lens, AF-S VR 70-300 telephoto and the AF-S VR 105 Micro-Nikkor. She also carries a Coolpix P5000 for those quick, candid shots.

A favourite technique is reducing the varied forms found in nature down to shape, texture, and colour until they suggest but don't telegraph their true identity. An affinity for the wonders of the natural world, along with a healthy respect for our environment, has stayed with Nancy since she was young, and she has endeavoured to express that passion through her images.

While still working in the health care field and indulging in her love for photography, Nancy also moonlights as a hand percussionist and vocalist in a worldbeat band, based in Toronto, Canada, and helmed by a Juno award-winning Kenyan-born musician (www.adamsolomon.ca).

The camera is an instrument that teaches people how to see without a camera.
