Pelicans are Australia's largest flying bird with a distinctive pouch under the beak which is the longest beak in the world of this species. Graham spotted it up high in the sky when we were at Terrigal beach yesterday. ~Pat and Graham

Hi there Mary, yes the title came from a Limerick.Graham named the image because it was his.
I replied "I can't describe it with that".
"A curious bird is the pelican.
His beak can hold more than his belly can.
He can hold in his beak
Enough food for a week
But I wish that I knew how the hell he can."
Thank you for your kind words Mary!

Thank you Avril, aren't they magnigicent creatures. I just love them the way they sour through the sky with such a wide wing span. I read that they can be 7 feet wide, that's huge! Thank you for dropping by! Graham says thank you for your kind words. ~Pat #8452321Amy M. Wilson March 13, 2010

What an outstanding inflight pelican capture, Pat & Graham!! WOW - great work, Graham!! I just LOVE seeing these majestic birds soaring on the wing, and gliding on the thermals!! It makes me wish I could go right up there and join them!! ;o)So many of us have often repeated at least part of the limerick from which Graham took his title for this image, Pat!! It's interesting to actually see it written out in full!! It's also interesting to read about Dixon Merritt, the author of this limerick!! :o)
"Dixon Lanier Merritt (1879 – 1972) was a poet and humorist. He was a newspaper editor for the Tennessean, Nashville's morning paper, and President of the American Press Humorists Association. He penned this well-known limerick in 1910."
