PG-101 Red Theme


I used the pen tool to isolate and precisely select areas to change to black and white, while leaving the face painting --the Jing Role for the Peking Opera --in color.

The Jing role refers to the painted faces. Each color symbolizes a certain characteristic: red is for loyalty and uprightness; white for a cunning and deceitful character. These can be warriors, heroes, statesmen, or even demons. The Peking Opera is at the Liyuan Theatre in Beijing (Peking).

Initially captured on Provia 100 slide film using a Canon EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM Zoom Lens, IS, and 420 EX Speedlite. This China trip was my first introduction to an upper level auto-manual Canon SLRs from purely manual Nikons and TLR.

Entered in February 2010, but my composition wasn't correct.

Nicely done sc idea for the theme, Bunny. The comp is great, and the color on the face draws us immediately to that as a spotlight would. I like too that you included the mirror edge in the red elements. #8401502

Thank you for your compliments, Mitch. I'm learning so much in the short time I've been at PG 101 from you and other members --it's like the real critiques received from instructors but without paying your for them. They mean so much to me because they help me improve my work!

I was thinking of using another image from China which had even more good red, but it was taken at a bad angle as is often the case on large tours, and I could not get it to work properly.

At first, I wanted to remove the green background, and then realized that if I removed everything except for the face paint the point would be really clear.

I'm really improving laying down squares with the pen tool, and can almost do it in my sleep. I took ideas that I've seen others do and just tried them out for size. This improved the composition.
