Crazy Bug

Description

This guy was hiding under a hibiscus plant last weekend, and I nearly missed him. After kneeling in the wet (mosquito-laden) grass for more than half an hour, I had the brilliant idea to snip the leaf he was on, and take him to new heights...

Once deposited on a hibiscus leaf about 2 1/2' feet off the ground, I could at least shoot him without aggravating the knees quite so badly!

Feel free to identify the specie for me. I'm assuming it's a katydid/bush cricket of some sort.

Tess L. Yee November 13, 2009

Thanks for each and every awesome comment!

Grasshoppers have short, thick antennae, rather than the long and slender antennae exhibited here. That's why I thought it might be a katydid.

If I weren't the lazy rebel that I am, I would have been carrying a tripod, and could have placed the creature out of the direct sunlight...
