I'll Bee Checkin' You Out!
Uploaded: October 19, 2009
It was a (mostly) dark, cold, windy, and gloomy weekend here in coastal North Carolina. This fella was sitting on my windshield, desperately trying to warm up so he could fly away.
Or maybe he's just narcissistic, and enjoys staring at his fine visage!

Thanks for all these really great comments! The trip to the park had essentially been a waste, as the squirrels were only down for ~10 minutes before the resident red tailed hawk showed up. It was so overcast that everything looked dark and murky. Thank goodness for this guy! #8049708

Whoa! Thanks for all of the wonderful comments!Outside my norm, as it isn't furry, nor is the image particularly colorful. I've been under the weather, and a quick nip'n'tuck and a little brightening was just about all the editing I could handle this weekend.
(Case in point: I edited two squirrel shots on Saturday, and didn't notice until yesterday that both squirrels were somewhat green...yikes!). #8050580

I can't help but chuckle at this capture, not because it is funny, because it really is very excellent. But I chuckle due to your title...let me explain...the other day I was out in the yard and I told my hubby who happens to be a diehard scientist by profession, “Honey, there are bees everywhere”, he then said “there are no bees” and I said “are you blind…they are everywhere and coming after me”, then it dawned on me…in his intellectual way he was telling me they aren’t bees they are yellow-jackets and then I said…”okay, if you want to split hairs they have a stinger so they are still bees to me”.Mark Dodge October 20, 2009
This is a masterpiece, in my opinion. The overall composition is almost minimalistic, yet there are incredible details in the yellow jacket. The soft blue gradients in the background pull the eye right back to the center, from any corner. Really excellent work here, Tess. I love this. #8053406Courtenay Vanderbilt October 20, 2009

Tess, I got the following "handy tip" in an e-mail:"Wasp Spray
I have a friend who is a receptionist in a church in a high risk area who was concerned about someone coming into the office on Monday to rob them when they were counting the collection. She asked the local police department about using pepper spray and they recommended to her that she get a can of wasp spray instead. The wasp spray, they told her, can shoot up to twenty feet away and is a lot more accurate, while with the pepper spray they have to get too close to you and could overpower you. The wasp spray temporarily blinds an attacker until they get to the hospital for an antidote.. She keeps a can on her desk in the office and it doesn't attract attention from people like a can of pepper spray would. She also keeps one nearby at home for home protection. You could also keep it in your car and it would be legal. I Thought this was interesting and it might be of use to lots of ladies.... Pass it on ...."
Maybe it'll help people out both with the wasps themselves, AND with would-be attackers.
