American Bittern

Uploaded: August 15, 2009

Description

I followed this bird around a pond for quite some time, thinking it was a green heron.... because of the way it stalked its prey and its general build, but I hid behind a tree and it came within 6 feet. I then noticed by its coloring that it probably is NOT a green heron. It was about 18" high and could stretch to about 24". Does anyone know what it is?

American Bittern ! They usually freeze (at first) when disturbed. "Facing danger, its bill points skyward and its longitudinal brown steaking blends well with its vegetated surroundings" (Birds of Northern California. Lone/Pine). Very beautiful shot, Linda !! #1168526

Thank you so much Philleppe! I looked on line and it seems a perfect match! My question is then... I photographed this bird in Southern Indiana. Do you know if this is a common habitat? #7850922

This is a really rare and uncommon bird anywhere. I live in the middle of a huge marsh and rarely spot one of theme. Never could capture one, so, your portrait it's really outstanding !! #7851659

WOW! That's cool! Thanks again. I will now change the title of the photo since it is no longer a mystery! #7852031
