American Bittern

I followed this bird around a pond for quite some time, thinking it was a green heron.... because of the way it stalked its prey and its general build, but I hid behind a tree and it came within 6 feet. I then noticed by its coloring that it probably is NOT a green heron. It was about 18" high and could stretch to about 24". Does anyone know what it is?

This is a really rare and uncommon bird anywhere. I live in the middle of a huge marsh and rarely spot one of theme. Never could capture one, so, your portrait it's really outstanding !! #7851659Linda M. Brown August 16, 2009
