Very nicely composed and captured Peter - I think that the buzz works very well here! Jeff #7690655

Much appreciated Jeff. I had no idea what Buzz was until a couple of hours ago when I was browsing through the BP Q&A webpage and Carolyn Fletcher mentioned that it was "back again and was free!" So, "free" is always interesting so I read their web page and downloaded it.
I was careful to not be too heavy- handed on the image as it is all too easy to get carried away with actions like this, Topazand and HDR. My wife is a professional artist and she gives me a hard time when I push saturation or sharpening etc too much!

Great shot Pete. As Jeff said it is a good comp. I checked out buzz.com and got an error message. Checked on Google and found buZZ.Pro 2.0 but it said it was $150.00 download. Do you have the web address you checked out?
Hope you enjoy your vacation in your hometown! Here in Sacramento it's been 105+ -108* YIKES!

Thanks very much Susan.
The link that Carolyn provided was :

http://asnailpace.com/blog/buzz-pro-v30/

It only works on a PC not a MAC and in addition some folk say it doesn't work with Vista on their PC.

And thanks too for your best wishes for my vacation. I think they have had a blistering 65F today so I might be giving a swim in the ocean a miss!

Warm regards and God's blessings Susan. Pete #7698962

Ha-ha I've got the Warmest of Regards right here in good old Cali!
Thanks for the link. Will check it out asap and give it a try.

Peter - I like this the colors and lines in this image. The only thing that is bothering me is that the crop feels a little too tight for my liking. Otherwise, fantastic image! #7699245

Peter W. Marks July 02, 2009

Thanks for your comments Jeff. I do take your point about the crop. I am not sure what I had in mind. I leave for the airport in 3 hrs so will take a look at the original and play around with it when we get back from the UK.

And Susan, we have had ten days of mid and high 90's plus the typical mid-west humidity so things is going to be different back in Cornwall! I have only been to Sac once, a few years ago.

Hi Peter, a great subject for the buzz filter, I agree with Jeff concerning the crop, its just a little too tight, I would like to see more of the reflection. #7703359

Meghan Gonski July 04, 2009

I like it tight
I like this image a lot better than the blue boat
I like the duck logo on this boat :) it's cute
What is a buzz filter? #7704966

Peter W. Marks July 05, 2009

And this is what I love about BP, Thomas and Meghan -two completely opposite opinions!
A Buzz filter Meghan is in fact a whole suite of about 20 filters in a plug-in that you can apply to an image to give all sorts of effects ranging from smoothed out to the point at which you can only see the colors, not detail, to the other end of the scale where you can get a sharpened, brightened, crisper image. And all at the click of a button! If you are familiar with the Topaz plugins it has many similarities.

Meghan Gonski July 05, 2009

Ah interesting. Nope I don't have Topaz but I don't really like the effect so I'm not missing anything.
I have that smooth edges effect. I never knew what it was for. Now I do. Thanks :) #7708257

Peter W. Marks July 06, 2009

Ah! Megan, Meghan, Meghan! Let me explain Topaz. It isn't just one effect. They have a bunch of downloads and you can make dozens of adjustments in each one.I use Topaz Adjust but I am thinking that what you don't like is the effect that gives a very hard-edged, rather over-saturated look to an image. But there is no need to push all the sliders over to the maximum position for each effect ; a little bit of this and a little bit of that and the whole image can be made more eye catching. Think in terms of a ladies make-up. A professional make-up artist can do amazing things with a face but what we hate is the self applied look that many girls use and end up looking like racoons.
If you Google Topaz adjustments you will probably find dozens of tutorials.

Meghan Gonski July 07, 2009

Ohhh I never knew that.
You're right I think I don't like photos that are pushed to the top in Topaz for saturation and for this crayon tequine. Here is a link to a photo I am talking about that I don't like the effect. http://www.betterphoto.com/gallery/big.php?photoID=7732486&catID=&style=&rowNumber=52&memberID=176793
This guy does it a lot to his photos. Some I do like, but most I'd like the original better.
Thanks for explaining. #7713493

Peter W. Marks July 07, 2009

It is always interesting to hear other folk's opinions but it would be even more interesting if they could find the words to attempt to explain what it is that displeases them. I do realise that this can be difficult as often it is just a feeling along the lines of someone saying "I like green peas but I don't like green beans." If asked to explain about all that can be said is "Peas taste better!" Now if I say I like that car show image you linked me to I would have to add that the acrylic painting effect is just that, no more ,no less but they remind me of Norman Rockwell's paintings of Americana that appear regularly on the back cover of Readers Digest magazine and which allow me to imagine I am there at the show. For reasons I can't explain it stimulates my imagination much more strongly than if it were a straight forward photo-accurate image where one can get hung up over whether it is perfectly in focus etc.

I thought I did describe why I didn't like it. Guess not good enough sorry.I generally don't like the photos in the effect because it looks like a crayon or painting. I feel that painting should be painting and photography should be photography. Normally I feel I am thorough in my critiquing of telling why especially since I started the club based on this princaple. Guess I was having an off day when I posted that one. It was 2:45 in the morning. :)
So this one http://www.betterphoto.com/gallery/big.php?photoID=7984653&style=&contestCatID=&rowNumber=74&camID=&memberID=176793&zulu=
I like. Why? Cause it is a photo I think I would pass up if it didn't look different. The effect compliments the building and car. It gives it a subject. It looks like a really hot day and the car light on the left emphasises the "waiting" that is used in the title and the man standing in the middle of the frame.
This one:
http://www.betterphoto.com/gallery/big.php?photoID=7815159&style=&contestCatID=&rowNumber=111&camID=&memberID=176793&zulu= I don't like the effect, it takes away the beautiful water and beach. Everything looks smeered to me and the big power plant in the back makes me wonder is it smeered because of the stuff blowing out of it? (Even though I know it's not why, it's the effect that's why)
This one: http://www.betterphoto.com/gallery/big.php?photoID=7843535&style=&contestCatID=&rowNumber=109&camID=&memberID=176793&zulu= and this one: http://www.betterphoto.com/gallery/big.php?photoID=7991382&catID=&style=&rowNumber=73&memberID=176793
I like both of these because for the bike it is an ordinary thing but it has more of a vibe to it with the effect and the view. The horse one I like because it reminds me of a few books from my childhood, like Central Square or something.
What do you think of those explainations Peter? :)
Talk to you later, Meghan

Oh by the way, you sort of remind me of Dave, the photographer of these photos, when I used to "know" him on BP. :) I bet you guys would get along great. #7716848

Hi Peter. Like your boat and the effects as well. Enjoyed your dialog on the use of the Topaz filter. It's the only filter suite I've ever purchased but with all the variations it allows, it covers my needs. #7749155

Peter W. Marks July 17, 2009

Greetings friend Dale and thank you. And thank you Meghan for your thorough explanation of your likes and dislikes. I only have limited access to a computer while travelling around on vacation here in the UK so will put off visiting all the links until we get home at the end of the month.
