Remains of an era [Fort photos & Fortresses pictures]

The structure in front is called the Haveli Man Singh (named after one of the generals of Sher Shah Suri). The structure in the background is called the Rani Mahal. Both these structures are a very good example of Hindu architecture of its time. The steel railing, of course, was erected later for the safety of the visitors going up the stairs.
These structures lie inside the Rohtas Fort, which was built in 1541. Following the defeat of the Mughal Emperor Humayun in 1541, an afghan king, Sher Shah Suri, built a strong fortified complex at Rohtas, a strategic site about 16 kilometres north-west of the city of Jhelum, about 130 kms from Islamabad. Owing to its marvelous qualities of strength and solidity, and being the finest specimen of medieval military architecture in Pakistan, the fort was inscribed in the World Heritage List, by UNESCO, in 1997. An annual Sound and Light Show is held at the Fort to raise funds for its restoration and Conservation.
