Twin Angels

Uploaded: November 07, 2008

Description

Legend has it that when the head architect was working on Heidelberg Castle, his twin sons would come visit him at the site almost every day. One day, one of the boys slipped on the scaffolding, and both fell to their deaths.

Their father was inconsolable. Much to Emperor Ruprecht’s distress, he stopped working on the castle and spent all his time weaving funeral wreaths of white roses.

Then one night, his sons appeared to him in a dream as angels. The next morning, he found the latest wreath that had been withering on the boys’ grave by his bedside – except, to his astonishment, the roses had turned red and were fresh and fragrant.

The architect returned to work and ordered the keystone of the castle gateway carved with his twin angels, bearing a wreath and a compass, the symbol of the builder’s profession. It was set in place on St. John’s day in 1408, and the emperor himself gave the dedication speech.

Now you know why I loved the three years I lived in Heidelberg. I hated history in school. But fell in love with it when I lived in Europe. #1031161

When I was in the 4th grade, I took my history book home to read for pleasure in the evenings. I've alway loved history, but too often, it is taught as just dates and wars. I was very lucky to have several great history teachers. #6722708
