Bell-Ringing Angel

Uploaded: October 20, 2008

Description

This charming cherub exhibits his musical talents every day on the famous astronomical clock at Strasbourg Cathedral (just across the border from Germany, in the Alsace region of France).

At 12:30, during the mid-day spectacular, he rings his bell, while a fellow-angel turns an hourglass. Meanwhile animated figures representing the ages of man parade before Death, and the Apostles pass in front of Chirst.

The current clock (the third to adorn the cathedral) was built between 1838 and 1842 and is considered a mathematical marvel. It not only shows the official time, but the solar time, day of the week, month, and year. It also indicates leap years and equinoxes, plus the sign of the zodiac, phase of the moon, and position of several planets. And it could make the complicated calculations to determine the date of Easter in an age when computers had not yet been invented!

Thanks, Sheryl. I thought this little angel was just darling. I had square stickers made our of this photo to put on a few of my Christmas cards. They came out great! #6721670
