World's Cutest Town Hall

Uploaded: October 13, 2008

Description

I imagine Maulbronn, Germany, has the same problems as towns around the world. But they also have a much cuter place to solve them!

Came upon this Rathaus (town hall) while visiting the nearby 12th century monastery, which is a UNESCO world heritage center. And someone had even left a bicycle in the perfect place to accent my photo.

The town crest with the mule and fountain comes from the legend that the Cistercian monks – who wanted to be far from the temptations of society but needed a water source – loaded up a mule with a sack of money, blessed it, and sent it on its way. When the animal stopped to drink at a stream, the brothers took it as a sign that that was where they should build. Today, a fountain stands there, and that’s how Maulbronn – which means “mule fountain” – got its name!

Thanks so much, Stefania. II thought it was such a charming building. I didn't know it was the town hall at the time I took the photo. I thought it was probably a restaurant or inn. Only later, when I saw the city hall in Karlsruhe called a Rathaus, did I realize what it was -- and I could hardly believe it! #6595285

Thanks so much, Bill and Jeffrey. I am so lucky to be able to accompany my husband on many of his trips. He is in fire safety science and often has conferences with experts from other countries. I have my own business, so I am able to reserve the time. Just hope the economy gets better, as his company pays his way, but we always have to pay mine! #6603078

Jean, I think this is the one you were mentioning when you commented on my Essentially Irish shot. Very nice. Maybe we should call such things essentially European. #7637060
