Description

You know you are having a good day when a Bald Eagle is watching you watch the elusive and secretive Least Bittern directly below him, then a Crested Caracara flies into a tree opposite the Bald Eagle--a fortunate day for sure.

I like your photo Robert. I was really surprised to learn that the Caracara is native to our area. I've seen one in Homosassa Springs but never one in the wild. I'm going to have to do some reading...and looking for him. Good work! #5816501

Dick, the small Florida population seems to be a bit of an anomaly. Looking at Sibley's range map, you have this small dot around Orlando south to north Miami. The next place you see them is in south Texas and south Arizona into Mexico and Baja. The numbers are not only small but are declining due to (guess what?) loss of habitat, and the small Florida population leads to inbreeding which is also a danger to its survivability.

Interesting Caracara facts: it is a member of the falcon family. It sometimes hangs around vultures and will eat carion like a vulture but like hawks will also attack live prey.
