Limpkin

Uploaded: March 13, 2008

Description

Looking like something between a crane and a rail, this odd wading bird has no close relatives. It is widespread in the American tropics, but enters areas only in Florida, where it can satisfy its dietary requirement for a certain freshwater snail. Picture taken at Seminole Park. Seminole, Florida. I've been going to the park almost everyday. I've seen the Limpkin many times now. The other day I saw two of them together. It's fun watching them bring out the Apple snail. They'll bang it on the ground to get the stuff out of it. I've been collecting them. I take them home and clean them out and bleach them. I have over 40 of them now. You can look them up on the web to read about them.

I love to read and learn. Lighting and clarity are outstanding.
