Description

Jarrell, Texas
18 January 2008

1940s era gas station along I-35 South (Exit 275)

Jarrell reached its high-water mark in 1914 with a population of 500. The declining cotton industry
and the Great Depression put Jarrell into an economic decline. The railroad failed in the 30s and
as early as 1933 the population was already down to only 200. Jarrell revived somewhat to an
estimated 350 by 1945. A devastating tornado hit the town in May, 1997, killing 27 people and
destroying many homes. This F5 tornado blew some houses completely off the foundations and
swept away the disentegrated remains. It also scoured asphalt from roads,
killed and dismembered hundreds of cattle, stripped bark from trees and uprooted them,
and bounced vehicles for up to half a mile from their parking places.

I heard of Jarrell before and it is sad that happened to that tiny town, hope it slowly comes back, Great image here, and love the effects, Jim.

Jim, this is sure an eye catching image with it's sharp, sharp focus, great detail, and super color treatment. I loved reading the history, and I sure am glad this little gem has survived all this time. You certainly did it justice with this fine shot!!

WOW! What an incredible find this is! And I really love this photo; the colors are phenomenal! I am always looking for these old gas pumps... there are still a few around my area (mostly, Wisconsin) but they're getting mighty few and far between. A wonderful photo of a much more attractive era, Jim! #5409443

Lovely Image Jim. I really like the detailed commentary you provide with it. I wish more people would take the time to tell the story that is behind (and in many cases) more interesting than the image itself. #5457697

You have an awesome gallery. So happy that I found it. I too appreciate your stories behind the photo. It adds much to the photo. #5472428
