Night Blooming Cereus
Uploaded: December 09, 2007
This is my first bloom of a Night Blooming Cereus. The Cereus blooms in the months of May thru October depending where you live and how warm the weather is.
It's blooming process begins at dusk and is fully bloomed by 2am, but as soon as the sun comes up, the flower dies and never re-blooms. I shot this photo at about 1am one morning. I used my Sony Mavica FD200 on the Macro setting, a black piece of cloth for the backdrop, and a simple flashlight for the lighting. I don't have a tripod so I had to hold the flashlight in one hand, and my camers in the other. This is one of my favorite shots of this beautiful flower, ENJOY!
Exif: F Number: 3.8, ExposureTime: 10/1600 seconds, Flash: did not fire., ISO: 100, FocalLength: 6.40 mm, Model: FDMAVICA

This is so cool. I have only seen one of these in bloom once before. I wish I could smell it. I can't believe you hand held this with just one hand at that and still had perfect focus and depth of field. That to me is as much of a miracle as the gorgeous flower itself. This is beautiful, Yvonne. You sure have a steady hand to hold the flashlight AND shoot this. Well done! #5202326Aimee C. Eisaman December 13, 2007
Wow...I love this shot even more than the other one.....stunning! This is not the same flower that I am speaking of....I tried to take a picture a long time ago and it just didn't work out. I can't wait for summer since I got my new camera to work with. My flower looks more like a hybiscus. Maybe I'll have to try the flashlight idea....but gotta use my tripod....I'm not as steady as you are! :) #5205749Sign up for an interactive online photography course to get critiques on your photos.
