Thanks for the comments guys. This was such a learning experience for me...how do I photograph a place like this? I just walked in and amongst the crosses, silently, for a couple of hours...trying to get my mind around the fact that there were ten thousand of these crosses and stars on this little piece of land...not only that, but that each one represents a life and story. I just had this massive flood of emotions and finally came to the conclusion that it was the sheer number of young men that just choked me up...I decided that the fisheye was the only way that I could even begin to show people how much it cost...I chose black and white for the contemplative nature...and underexposed it to add to the dreariness. I think it is worth mentioning, however, that this piece of land has the greenest grass I have ever seen. It was the bluest sky...the birds were ireverently carrying on...it was quite a sooting place...so I shot one with an entirely different mood and effect. I decided that for my generation, however, we need to understand the consequences (black and white)...for my grandfather (who landed in Normandy) I shot the color one to show him a weak, but poignant redemptive quality...the memory of his friends...sorry this is so long, but how can you stand on solemn ground and not be affected...thanks for making it through these comments...it really means a lot.

by the way...this is Omaha National Cemetary on Omaha Beach in northern France...just to clarify...realized I hadn't mentioned that...

the fisheye was an excellent choice... it emphasizes the vastness (real word?!) #19918
