Black and White in Color

Uploaded: November 02, 2007

Description

ISO 50, 1/160 @ f/29, one strobe with reflector

My aim was to see how much dynamic range I could get directly out of my camera, then how much tweaking I'd need to do in Lightroom to capture all the detail in highlights and shadows. I was pleasantly surprised at how well the camera did with such a high contrast subject. Only minor adjustments to darks and shadows were made. The detail in the shadows is very visible on my monitor, but they seem to have disappeared when I saved for the web. Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong?

Wow! Great light & contrasts! I also like the background! #777200

Thank you, Tiia. The image lost some of the detail when I saved it for the web. I can see some of it on my monitor, but lesson learned. From now on I'll upload first, then tweak, then submit.

Thanks again! #5020319

Hey Teri- When you "save for web" you can lose contrast, saturation, and sharpness. Several things you can do to help prevent this are convert the image to sRGB color space. If your image file was in Adobe(1998) you will see a change in contrast and saturation. From there, adjust levels(contrast) by pulling in the darks a bit, adjust saturation(punch it back up a bit), and sharpen(smart sharpen slightly).

Then you need to adjust everyone's monitor that views your image! JQ #5045106

Thanks, James. I did change the color space to sRGB. I think I just need to make my blacks not so black. As for adjusting everyone's monitor, that would be quite a challenge, wouldn't it!!! Thanks, again! #5045553

Hi Melissa, your comment is very kind! I do like to experiment and have quite a lot of images in the trash, so it's nice to hear encouraging words like yours!
