Brood X Cicada

Uploaded: May 26, 2004

Description

One of a cast of billions. This fellow is a 17-year cicada, one of billions that are emerging, singing, mating, laying eggs, and dying (the last time in the Maryland area was 1987). Trees are currently covered in them; the noise (80 decibels!) is astounding; and all the bug haters (panickers) are freaking out! Autofocus; 100 mm Macro lens; flash; handheld

Great shot James.
As a fellow Marylander, I've been shooting these guys a lot myself!
There seems to be more of them here than in 1987.

Thanks, Bob! I missed the 1987 brood by one year, having moved to the Harford County area in 1988, but I'm thrilled to be here for this momentous event. I hope to be able to capture their sound as well. Again, thanks! Jay

Thank you, Colette! He isn't quite as pretty as your flowers, but for a bug, he is beautiful! Jay
