Wow! This is such a beautiful capture, Jim! So majestic! The quality of the 500mm lens really is exquisite! Thanks for sharing! #652961

Thank you, Helen. I had photographed the horses last June with only a 200mm, waiting for them to get close before shooting. But that was a mistake, because they dispersed too much as they approached. I couldn't get all the horses in the frame. With the 500mm last March, I started shooting just as they started running, and it worked. I could get most of the horses in the frame before they spread out, and before they got so muddy.

The relatively large f/4 allowed me to use a fast enough shutter speed in the hazy sunset lighting.

The warm hues are simply awesome and the action you captured with the 500mm lens is incredible. The group of horses with their unified power is a great sight to behold, Jim!!! #4375533

Thank you everyone for your comments. This has become one of my favorite pictures, and it took two trips to France to get it.

Fantastic Jim, this is powerfull and energetic, stunning capture.
I dont know how to say it in english..but in portuguese I would call it an intemporal image.
It can really send us to a Clint Eastwood film shooting cenario.
Congratulations #4385519

Wow, amazing capture in motion! I would love to get an image like this one...I have tried hummingbirds in motion and still not clear. I do have a 70-200mm lens.....any thoughts, Jim? #7515718

Hi Shelly,

Thank you. Horses and hummingbirds are very, very different. With horses, you need a fast shutter speed to freeze action. With hummingbirds, you need a multiple flash setup. I am planning a photo tour to Costa Rica next year specifically to shoot hummingbirds. All the lights will be set up as well as the background. It's a technical challenge because you need both a brief exposure time (which is derived from the short flash duration -- about 1/4000th of a second) AND depth of field. How this is done is really interesting.

Thanks Jim.....I appreciate the feedback. I have shot a few hummingbirds that did come out, but as you said, I used a fast shutter speed. Hope you have fun on the trip and let us know when you post the hummingbirds! #7516348

Shelly,

I'm going down there at the end of August to research the trip. They should be posted around Sept. 1.
